What track bike (for the track)?

  • I'm after a "reasonably priced" track bike for Manchester velodrome (already got a fixie for the road) - any suggestions of what's out there that's worthwhile? The basic Fuji feels too cheap; Dolan PreCursa looks reasonable value, and there's some deals on Tiffosi & the next-up Fuji - trouble is none of them really float my boat, that I really want one...?

Ta - but what's good...? Maybe I should go for a vintage track bike, but i do need an 11" bottom bracket for Manchester...

  • What size are you?

  • Get either the Nelson track frame for £225 or, if your budget will stretch to it, the Planet-X carbon track frame for £500. Both are Manchester ready and both are bargains at those prices.

  • What size are you?

    22"

That's my bike size - I'm not actually two-foot tall

  • PX full bikes are 700 delivered. I'd buy one if i wasn't so keen on a a fuji

that would be 24 inches so you're under 2 feet tall then, right?

    sorry if i missed something.

What would be a sensible built-up cost for the Nelson?

  • apparently, Pinarello's are pretty sweet....... ;)

  • Planet X all the way IMO.

  • Have you had a look at the notice board at the Velodrome, normally a fair bit of very reasonably priced (i.e. Non-Ebay/Hipster Taxed) complete bikes and frames, my friend picked up an 853 F&F + BB + Headset + Cranks + Stem for £225

  • Noticeboard seems very empty at the moment - less than half-a-dozen posters up and nowt in my size :( Maybe I should put a "Wanted" up there....

difficult to advise seeing as you just discounted some of the most serious contenders...

most alloy frames of a certain price point will be nicer on the boards than some vintage thing. Unless you are an adamant luddite, or on a budget, there's no advantage in old steel bikes on tracks like this.

The rational side of me says buy one of those, it just feels more like buying a washing machine or a 'fridge. The Tiffosi is more than I'd ideally spend but looks stunning VFM with £300 off

  • there is some info in this thread: http://www.londonfgss.com/thread12358.html

but not much, other than PX are good value

  • All of my track bikes have come as frames from people trading up so the wanted sign might work - means someone knows there's cash for their frame.

Agree with RPM, there's little advantage to be had going vintage on a track, and lots of disadvantages (price is only one). Tight alu frames are great on the track, try one before dismissing them!

  • What he said ^^

My tight alu Koga is far more responsive and quicker than my vintage steel Italian steed. It is however, lot more uncomfortable over the longer races like you find at HH.

  • racing is not meant to be comfortable.... :-)

  • Mike is getting soft... ;P

  • Felt TK3 for sale.

56cm, carbon forks, carbon cranks, mack hubs with ceramic bearings lace to H plus Son rims with DT spokes and nips, carbon/ti seatpost, carbon, stem, carbon bars, arione saddle.

    Looks the shiz.

    1k

*getting *soft sounds a bit.... rude.

  • you said it Tom....

  • Thanks for all the advice - I went and bought a Zanussi PreCursa :-)
