Aren't field blewitts a touch near the border line of this-could-kill-you-or-trip-you-out? and pretty bitter tasting?

No, but not to be eaten raw, alongside the wood blewitt they are my favourite of all species I've found not just for their rich flavour, but they are pretty "chunky" so you only need a few to make a meal, and if you do find them they are usually abundant....
plus it's pretty hard to mis-indentify them, because they grow at a time of year when most other mushrooms don't.
