I got a eurohike wilderness 30 air to replace my Timbuk2. Not the best-looking bag in the world, but I can fit tools, locks, clothes, and half a weeks food shopping in it. If I'm using it to cart less stuff around, then pulling the front straps right down makes it much more compact. The mesh thing stops the bag from touching my back at all (= no sweat), and it has has an ok waterproof covering and strap for attaching a rear light to. I don't bother ever doing the waist strap up, just keep it snapped shut and shortened up all the time. It was £25 from Blacks I think.

I have been riding with an older Deuter, with the air mesh thingy, and compared to my Chrome Metropolis, it definitely "breaths" better.
The curved shape does however cut down on space. You may want to go one size up. And look for the Deuter Cross Air EXP
Might be worthwhile taking a look at the bag in an outdoor shop before buying.
Shop around too, Evans is expensive.

was concerned you were trafficking people in your bag...
the problem is that most bags that include ventilation end up lifting the bag from your back- making you less stable - raising your Centre of Gravity and by suspending the bag above your back they tend to wobble more

evans will price match though, so shop around and then google it in front of the evans staff - hey presto price match

The bag still touches your back at the top and bottom, so you will still have two large sweat patches that spread. It's the compromise you have to accept if you want to carry your stuff on your person.

you wouldn't get the sweat marks if you don't carry anything in your bag OR only carry breathable goods; french toast, linen, loose knit woolen scarfs, sieves & cheese graters.. which to be fair is all i roll with

I think you'll find that french toast is only semi-permeable dude. The albumen is full of protien which solidifies when cooked.

Good point Man, i have thrown it out of my back in a suffocating fit of disgust and replaced it with a couple of waffles

Why not just go paniers and is sweat really a problem this time of year?
-
• #11
paniers really dig in your kidneys with those metal frames. really bad idea man, i am still scratched from a ride i did 6 months ago, it's like strapping a doxe angry otters to your back, Otters with big metal teeth.

I am intrigued where your kidneys are and why are they come in to contact with paniers.
In any case, I used to ride with paniers attached to a rack and never had any issue. Was riding in 30+ degree heat so it was the only way to avoid a sweaty back.

You need to ride harder.

You need the appropriate piercing to hang panniers safely, I think you must be missing them.

Thank god for you Tommy. These two were driving me nuts.

Don't thanking god too soon - it is a valid variant spelling http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/panier

Merriam Webster has been roundly discreditted in academic circles.

I provide the following quote from a professor in support of my claim:
"Those guys at marriam webster have no fucking idea what they're talking aboout"

Konijn - I like the look of that mesh back, nice and breezy. I might have a looksee if eurohike do a smaller version as I'll only be smuggling small people.
I've found the Deuter for cheaper online but went for the Evans link for ease of use, might find out if Evans have one in store though so I can scope it out.
Not too sure about panniers as I'd rather the bike stayed light. I suppose I could hang them off my nipples but then I'd have to go shirtless (would solve the sweat issue though...)
Deuter Cross Air is a nice size, but doesn't have the breathable straps. Aggh decisions, decisions!

I believe Evans price match so just bring print out of the cheaper price with you.
Aside from wanting to write a nice alliterative thread title, I'm on the hunt for a bag I can use for my daily commute which won't make me sweat like a whore in church. Ideally I want a backpack with some sort of breathable back and straps rather than a messenger bag, with space to fit a change of t-shirt, hoody, lock and a few tools.
I've had my eye on this Deuter bag, which seems pretty good but possibly a bit small.
Any ideas?
