My old man used to drive lorries. I've spent a lot of time in the cab. And despite the fact that they're so big, if something hits the rear part of the lorry you might not hear it in the front but there's very little between the driver and a cyclist banging on the front. You've got no bonnet in a lorry.
Even with the radio on loud, I can't see how you could not realise what you were doing/had done. Unless... He was late and had taken a wrong turn, got annoyed at being held up by a bicycle that pulled up in front of him, then drove through the bike deliberately and knew he was driving over the bike, just didn't realise til no cyclist appeared at the side of the cab that he'd crushed the rider. At that point he clearly panicked and decided the "Sorry, I didn't see him" defence was the easiest.
Some people think car, car, car, car and have it in their heads they can push a bike out of the way like you would a 4-wheeled vehicle. Rather than the truth that it it's more likely to end up under the wheels.
