Enabler, this might be a bit big. you need to get him to try out a few different sized bikes (ostensibly in preparation for the January sales). Or measure his inside leg (barefoot +accurately) and height and google for a bike fit calculator.
I think a shop would be best though. so you can see what he is after roughly.
and brakes are a MUST.
