Chain ring rubs against chain stays

Posted on
  • hi there,
been running an old claud butler coureur frame fixed for a while and the chain ring seems to rub against the right-hand chain stay unless i loosen the right side of the bottom bracket and tighten the left side right up. this means the bottom bracket juts out a little on the right. is there any solution to this? a wider bottom bracket? or should it be ok like this?

  • smaller chainring or BB with a longer spindle

  • Wider bb

  • keep on doing what your doing, unless the chainline is far out.
    then do the above

  • Make a shim out of toenail clippings

this is what Hippy does and he's dead good at riding

  • The problem is that with a 42 mm chain line on a mtb frame with a large chainring you are likely to have this problem.

    Possible solutions.

    1. New hub with wider chain line. Also requires new b.b or moment of chainring rom inner to outer position.

    2. Re dish the wheel and pack some swasher on the non drive side between hub and frame to move chainline. Also needs the above change of chainring position or new b.b.

    3. Smaller chainring so that you do not have the rubbing, you will also want a smaller cog so that you maintain the same ratio.

    4. Crimp you chain stay. To do this shape a peace of wood to support the back of the chain stay, then in a vice clamp something the size and shape of the crimp you wish to create against the chainstay. Work slowly and in small increments.

  • Being as it only seems a little I'd be tempted to crimp.

  • You could try putting the chainring on the other side of the spider.

  • i had this from worn out spindles which let the crank arms push further in. I just simply removed the smaller chainring and continued as normal.
