  • anyone have a suggestion on dates? i'm starting to fill out licence applications and insurance applications and stuff. here are the options:

    april 17-18
    april 24-25
    may 1-2 (& 3rd is a holiday)
    may 8-9
    may 15-16

there appears to be absolutely nothing happening in the european polo world in spring yet

  • maybe not

  • To clarify, I had been talking to a lot of guys about it over the summer, so I finally sent an email to Manchester, Oxford, Cambridge, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Birmingham and now Leeds seeing if any city was interested in holding a UK Champs next year.

To date, Newcastle and Edinburgh have said no, but are interested in setting up a Northern League. Cambridge will be hosting a tournament early next year, but want it to be an Open. Oxford are thinking about it. Haven't heard back from Manchester or Birmingham.

Andy, I've been speaking to Nes about hosting this as a one day tournament as part of her "i bike mcr" festival. A weekend full of bike related fun followed by the UK polo champs. There is a space on top of the manchester velodrome that we will look in to, and I think we'll be fine to house everyone. Nes has organised loads of big events including a few polo tourneys. So we're more than confident of putting on a really good event. Josh, i'd be up for a tourney in Leeds but I think Manchester has more appeal for the UK Champs. What does everyone think?

I need to run a few things by Nes first and then I'll reply to the email. But just for the record Manchester are well up for hosting this! Nes's festival/polo tourney last year was in April. How about aiming to do the UK champs in April 2010?

  • Sounds awesome Chan. Do it!

  • Could be the perfect way to choose what UK teams head to the '10 EHBPC…

  • sounds good chan, i think if i can fit leeds in before it it would be a good warm up tourney for teams that may be new or a bit rusty on tournament play, so the later you can push your dates and the earlier i can push mine the better maybe?

Oxford are planning a tournament on the 8th May as part of the Cycle Oxford festival:

  • a few folk playing in Nottingham would be up for this too

  • I'm well up for Manchester holding the champs, was a great tourney last year, think this one would be even better, and we we're talking and think we could get housing sorted quite well.

What's the deal this year, is it a certain quota per city again?

  • surely

  • I meant as opposed to using the nationals as a qualifyer

  • Clement hasn't mentioned the limiting factor for teams yet. But has implied that his own team will have to qualify to play.

Also, polo is based on where you play, not what country you're from. So a nationals would only affect euro qualification if only the teams that participate in the UK nationals are allowed into the ehbpc according to their city/ranking. i.e. top 4* London teams in the nationals, top 4* Manchester teams, etc. etc. and no late-comers. This would only leave 2 months for the top teams to get their travel and lodgings sorted.
    (*hypothetical numbers)

So I guess I'm suggesting that having the nationals sort out participants of the ehbpc should be agreed by a majority of UK players.

But UK nationals on top of the MCR velodrome?

... There is a space on top of the manchester velodrome that we will look in to...

    Fuck Yea!

Does anywhere apart from London have more than 4 teams? Maybe bring the limit down to 2/city plus the top 4/8/whatever teams from the UK champs irrespective of location.

  • I'm all over this! I reckon some good clean Yorkshire air will most likely double my skill level.
    La Schmoove will be there.

  • Hit the North!

  • i doubt there will be more than 10-12 spots for the UK at the euros. they are trying to keep the entire tournament to 48.

how many uk teams played at the last euros?

  • loads

  • Specific as ever Snoops!

    In Manchester?

Sounds like the beginnings of a quality tourney anyways

  • could get interesting if only 10 uk teams can go.

  • birmingham will be bringing at least one team to manchester, still searching for our first win. also looking into going to geneva, and eagerly awaiting the selection procedure.

  • how many uk teams played at the last euros?

17, not including the Portsmouth team (who didn't show) and including Downham All-stars.

  • I don't think we should be mixing up Euro qualification with the UK champs.

This is not the right place for the discussion of Euro qualification, really. If we are going to discuss it, it should probably be done in a seperate thread on this forum or on bikepolo.ca - and in any case, it's really for Geneva to lead the discussion, not us.

    +1

Uk Champs will be a one day tourney with the emphasis on good old polo. It would take all the fun out of it if you had added pressure to try and qualify for the euros.
