Wanted: Large frame for fixie-ing

Posted on
  • Have been finding it really hard to find a large racing frame: 24-25 inch / 63-65 cm

I found one of gumtree a while back but hadn't noticed a slight bulge on the head tube: turned out that the top of the head tube had flared a little making it impossible to fit a new headset on without the whole thing rattling.

Anyway, I need to get another frame and move the bits I have onto that. I live in Oxford but travel to London regularly, so if you have a large frame in goodish condition in either cities or near them, let me know!

    thanks

  • What is fixieing?????

  • XXXlarge you mean

  • Yes: XXXLARGE size for me please!
Fixie-ing: making up a verb there, meaning: making a normal geared bike into a fixed wheel bike.

  • Got a 64cm Raleigh Gents frame without forks. Horizontal dropouts and rattle canned dark green. A few chips but dent and bulge free. £30 pickup only

  • I've got a 62 or 64 Dawes Lightning frame. It's heavy (the downtube is Reynolds 500, the rest is plumbers' pipe), made for 27'' wheels and I don't have a fork for it, but you can have it free, and I live in Oxford. If you're only planning to run a front brake, you can just throw a 700c fork on it and make it a ghetto lo-pro. That's how I had it built up, and aside from the bottom bracket being fairly low, it was fine.
However, it might be conditional on you coming to play polo once it's built up. :)

  • I got a higher end 80's raleigh 531c 62cm, I'm in brum but travel quite a bit, pm if interested. The only carlton pro-am's I've seen are 531 frame tubes only.

  • I've also got a 62cm Raleigh, but not 531, more like 501 so it will be alot cheaper...

  • i have a Peugeot carbolite frame that's 64cm. £35 if youre interested

  • tom.g: peugeot carbolite frames take french threading in bottom brackets and it's harder to find seat posts and stuff like that that fits isn't it?

chaliapin/maxcrowe: I'm really looking for a 64 at least. I've got disproportionately long legs and am about 6ft 3in(192cm). when i've ridden 62 or smaller i've had to have the saddle up ridiculously high which leaves me with the handlebars way down below me.

c.bitterman: thanks for the offer but i'd rather get a complete (lighter) racing frame and finally build up a proper bike, maybe even get it blasted and painted eventually. (oh, and i do keep meaning to try out polo in ox but never get round to it. maybe this week? can you PM me the details of where and when you meet?)

DoYouBlaze?: thanks for that, but i want to get forks and frame together

  • Definitely after a 25'' frame or bike, as I double checked size of a bike I have at home.
They seem to be pretty rare; I've spend a while on ebay having a look and only a few things in decent condition have come up.
I've posted an message on the CTC forum also.
There's no special site for XXXLarge bikes is there?!

  • a little patience on ebay and I
'm sure you'll get something, I've seen a lot of 25" frames as I keep an eye oput for my brother (six- five!) I'll post here if I see any.

  • Just how tall are you? And how much seatpost do you have showing on that 25" frame? I may be able to source you a complete 66cm Gazelle Champion Mondial but it won't be cheap I'd say between £250 - £300.

  • thanks for the links Tel & chaliapin

  • have a 70's 25.5" Carlton Professional in vgc.....is that the sort of thing?

  • i have a blue SUN frame around 62 cm. Live in notts but could post if you want? ill find a picture tonight

  • @dracula: 62cm is slightly smaller than the ideal 64-66cm i'm on the look out for.

@Betty Swollocks: that's the sorta thing. how much you looking for and does it take 700c wheels or smaller ones?

I've got my eyes on a 25.5 at the moment, so fingers crossed that I manage to seal the deal on that one. then i can stop bothering you guys with large frame inquiries.

  • 62cm Carlton Pro Am

    i think these are 531Pro or 531c

I'm pretty surprised this went for so little (43squid)
perhaps the "slight rust spots" put people off?
looks like a pretty beautiful frame. how much were you hoping to get minimum?

Extra large frames do seem to go for less as the market is that much smaller, seems like there are quite a few on offer atm though mate.
