Your fork does not look like it was filed... Have a look at the link above, there are lots of different crown race sizes, but usually 26.4mm or 27.0mm.

  • ok, finally. got my ambrosio headset from SJS and it only took a 'can strand' to get the race in place! I did however forgot to take pictures of the process..hahaha

    final 'product' :

    thanks for your help!

  • very nice :) glad that sorted you out :)

i was about to suggest this.

but glad you got it sorted.

  • Looks great, well done. I had the opposite problem had to file (using very fine file) a tiny bit off ti mtb fork before the race would hammer on with a Cyclus Crown Race Fitting Tool and big Engineer's hammer.

  • er, you're supposed to machine the crown if too big

  • Yeah you are right, there is now a good bike shop mechanic in my town who probably had such a tool, but as the amount of metal I needed to remove was miniscule, just went lightly round once with a very fine file and then the new Chris King race went on as easy as the old one did on the old Pace RC35 mxcd forks from the '90's it replaced, headset lining up fine so got away with bodging it.

  • i guess i am a bit anal when it comes to fitting parts.

As you should be, especially when it comes to headsets

  • Aha! So I just bought a 1" Tange headset and the fork crown race isn't working. I'm assuming I've got a 27mm fork crown and the race that comes standard is 26.4mm.

It's an old Holdsworth and a friend gave me a headset from an old Holdsworth and it is also 27mm.

Unfortunately, the old headset needs replacing. Does anyone know if Tange or similar do a 27mm crown race for their standard bottom of the line 1" threaded headset? The interwebs isn't helping me!

  • in your case the powdercoating is the problem, clean off the paint and it should fit

Ahhh, I hadn't thought about that, good point. But I wonder why the race from the older holdsworth headset fits?

I think I'll start by removing the paint and see if that sorts it, much easier than trying to source a 27mm race or having the fork milled. Thanks!

  • yes but they all have to be a 1" race!

JIS and ISO 1inch headsets have different diamiter fork crown elements. JIS is much looser on an ISO fork. I know this because i bought the wrong one and i could press the cups and crown race on to the steerer and frame by hand. worth a check before you start glueing or putting shims in.

  • crown races used on other crowns may fit as the other crown may have been to big for the crown race, thus stretching it. A difference of 0.05mm-0.15mm is what you should have, smaller and it will be too loose, bigger and it will be too tight, thus risking damaging the crown race.

the ISO inside diameter of a 1" crown race is 26.4mm, 27.0mm for JIS
