  • My Kryptonite Evolution Mini D lock was feeling a bit grournchy this morning when I put it on my bike. This evening the key turns but the damn thing won't unlock.

I tried dousing the key hole with electrical component cleaner but no joy.

The key rotates 90˚, it's not sticky at all, but it just doesn't open as it should. I tried for half an hour and had to get the tube home. (don't worry, it's in a relatively safe location) The lock is through the frame onto the rear wheel and nothing else.

    Options:
Try spare keys tomorrow? Doubt if this will help.
Try another spray of some kind, although it seems smooth already.
Drag it to Cavendish and seek help.
or get someone to grind or drill the thing off (how do I do this?)

Hopefully I was doing something woefully wrong today and it will just unlock tomorrow like magic.

  • key should turn 180 no?

  • Yes, I guess you are right. So its only turning half way.

  • Leave it at Brick Lane for 20 mins?

  • I did think of that. Get it nicked and then nick it back etc.

    Maybe I need some magic.

  • I have some magic I'm willing to sell, if you can part-ex me some wonderment or some NOS conjuring?

    Sorry.

  • I know it's a obvious one but did you squeeze the d bit and lock bit together?

One of the rubbery bits to stop it rattling about might be caught in the mechanism

  • Ask Kryptonite for a spare key? Perhaps your key is worn out?
You should try the other key - you never know

  • Gt85.

  • @Sainsburys Ed, thanks but I had the rubber bit pushed back already.
@east end images, I will try my other keys. I emailed Krypto but I don't expect they will reply.
@el squire I will be packing my GT85 don't worry. PTFE in effect boyeee.

    What do you think teenslain?

  • Spray a crapload of GT85/WD40 in there and leave it for a bit and it'll come out... I dragged my big Kryptonite out a few weeks ago for the first time in ages and I couldn't get that bastard open/shut for love nor money... Quick squirt, problem solved, at least I hope that's the problem... I don't think switch cleaner will do the job here...

  • I have been using the lock daily for over a year and then this happens.

  • exactly the same thing happened to me yesterday!

3 in 1 oil and lots of wiggling and it was ok, i'm going to keep oiling it every day. probably worth getting a new one before you have to fork out a lot of money for a locksmith one day.

  • Spray all orifices with GT85, Kryptonites do get grouchy if they don't get their lube... They rust up well fast... I hope that's all the problem is, otherwise I'm sure you can borrow an angle grinder on here easily enough...

  • If its only turning half way, try rotating the key left and right and pushing it in. Sometimes if you don't fully insert the key it only turns some of the notches(whatever) inside the barrel, leaving maybe one or two in the locked position. You need to jiggle the key to turn them all back to locked position then fully insert the key and turn them all to unlocked.

This happened to me one. True story.

  • Right, I am going in tomorrow with enough lubrication to start a slippery sort of war. I have had the lock 15 months and never oiled it so hopefully this is it. Maybe the recent damp weather is to blame.

  • @JC. Yes, I was peering in the barrel and there are a series of metal discs. The front one is able to be turned independently of the others. This seemed odd. I will jiggle it, just a little bit.

  • Is your Evo Mini the only Kryptonite lock you have?

  • Here we go...

  • Had exactly the same problem today. Only just seen this thread, JC summed up the problem. I assume the problem is from when the key is either removed after locking or when I tried to unlock

somewhere I once read it's best to apply oil to the the key and to lock and unlock a few times. They said that's the best way to oil a sticky lock. Spraying oil into the mechanism can caused it to clog up with dust and grime. Not sure if this also applies to bike locks.

  • :)

  • Is your Evo Mini the only Kryptonite lock you have?

OK, yes its the only Kryptonite lock I own but I do have another heftier lock on the bike. Why d'ya ask?

  • because they aren't THAT secure.

might want to go back now and put the other one on...

    :/

  • Don't worry, its got two locks on and its off the street.
