Swrve winter softshell trouser

Posted on
  • I'm looking for a good full length trouser for winter communter cycling. Has anyone had experience with these ones?

Also how does the material look i.e does it still look like cotton or does it have a shell suit-ish aesthetic.

    Thanks

  • If they are anything like the Milwaukee Hoodies then the softshell material is a bit like wetsuit material but not as thick.

  • The same material is used in a lot of schoeller ski/board wear, very good stuff, their top of the range jackets just use this stuff with a gore-tex membrane.
Its almost waterproof but not quite, for instance you will stay protected in medium-heavy rain for a while, but as soon as you are in prolonged heavy rain water will get through and you'll get wet, but you'll say relatively warm.
So in summary, pretty damn good in all but the most extreme conditions....for which you should be wearing overtrousers anyways ;)

  • I remember the jackets they used to make were around £300-350 with a Gore-tex membrane, so considering these are made out of the same material I think they represent pretty good value....

i've got the swvre wwr 3/4 shorts which I think are the same material. if so then yes quick drying, wind proof, water resistant and kept me fine in rain.

soft to feel and great against skin with a nice stretch to them, nothing like the hideous feel of overtrousers.

plus swvre stuff, as you'd see throught the forum is v highly rated generally and i'm v happy with all my purchases.

  • Cheers guys, I think you've sold them to me, time to get the visa out.

  • I think i'm the only person on this forum that doesn't like the Milawauke hoodie. I wanted one till I tried it but I found it too thick and warm for riding in this country, I think it's it's ugly and i don't like the shape. Actually I don't like hoods for riding anyway (they either act as parachutes when down or blinkers when up). I do need new winter riding jacket though... sorry, back to trousers.

  • wwr and softshell are different. Softshell is thicker and a more water resistant.

I got a new milwaukee, I thought it was to warm, but i've been wering it at night recently and its awesome! Snug as a bug in a rug

I like mine, but I know what you mean. I doubt I would actually wear it again for cycling - unless it was a couple of miles downhill in sub-zero temperatures (where a drag-racing parachute and oven-like warmth may actually come in handy!).

The few times I have tried I've got far too hot and had to garotte myself with the hood cord to stop it billowing around. I must be doing something wrong...?

  • I have been thinking of trying some ventile trousers or 3/4 lengths for winter.

they make them to order and have many more colours if you ask.

Howies used to make ventile trousers too.

    they are epically warm.
winter commuting is bliss at the moment.
I have 2 because I like them so much.
I don't race in town and wouldn't wear them on the real bike...
    they're pretty fucking awesome.

If you teamed up the top and trou, then you'd be so warm!
I'd be worried about sperm count more than wetness with these....

I dont think i've ever worn mine on the bike, far too warm. Awesome as a off the bike jacket/anorak though. I work nights and finish at 5am. keeps me lovely and snug and waterproof. Wore it the other night on the way home during the torrential rain and kept dry appart from a couple of spots along the zipper

haha now everyone admits it, they're good, but not for cycling! It's too warm for me for 3/4 of the year. For a non cycle specific jacket its expensive given thats how I use it now. I like cycling with lots of thin layers, the milwakee is about 5 layers in one.

  • Actually I find it great, last year it was really cold and the Milawaukee hoodie work fantastically well in the coldest of winter.

but this year, it's unusually warm, even in the middle of November when it should be much more chilly, the hoodie is a little too warm to ride on, althought it's fine if you're wearing a tees and that.

Fortunately I picked mine up off fleabay for £50 in excellent condition during the summer(I bet the original owner found it too hot to wear last winter too and decided to flog it :0D ) But off the bike, i love it. I reckon it's gonna last me about 5 years, maybe more as the quality is very good. It still so warm I'm just wearing a couple of layers of merino (and sometimes a merino buff) and a montane velo to keep the wind out, at the moment

  • Has anyone got an idea of when the Charge Surface clothing line is due out?

  • I emailed Charge about the cycling jeans they're due to launch under the Surface name. They are due in March apparently.

I ordered a pair of the Swrve winter trousers shortly after receiving that response.

  • I've been riding in these for just over a week now. They are toasty warm, very comfortable and the rain just rolls off them (although I've not tested them in a proper deluge yet).

  • And you looked most fetching in them on Friday. Richie uttered the word "irresistible"....
