  • EDGE is a GSM technology (it's a sort of 2.5G network).

    CDMA has its own standard 2G version, and then EVDO and EVDO Rev A which are its 2.5G/3G versions.

    So no, CDMA and GSM are not compatible over either 2G or 3G.

    There are some handsets that can handle both GSM and CDMA networks, but they are relatively few (it costs extra and handset manufacturers are very sensitive to increased costs).

    Usually people with GSM phones (ie Europeans, people from most Asian countries, Aussies, Africans) can still roam in the US, because there are a couple of GSM operators over there (AT&T, T-Mobile) that support the right network bands. But CDMA customers from the US (Verizon, Sprint) are mostly fucked if they try to roam overseas.
