Cinelli Quill Stem and Headset Problem?

Posted on
  • Hi All,

Ive just removed the headset on my Giant CFR along with the cinelli quill stem. I have regreased the headset and put it back and tightened it (as before). I am trying to tighten up the quill stem, however the bolt is just turning and will not tighten?!

    Any ideas?
(ive not dealt with quill stems before....clearly)

  • You need to get the expander nut at the bottom of the stem to engage. It's a knack that is hard to explain. Let me go and look for a video.

  • cheers andy

  • This one is okay, but he has the expander bolt already engaged. Your problem is that you haven't. You need to ensure it is before you install it, otherwise it won't tighten.

  • Hmm, thanks for the video.

The expander bolt doesnt seem to be engaged on the bolt im trying to tighten, im not sure if this could of come off when removing the stem?

  • It's possible. Take it out and look, it's a wedge shaped nut at the bottom so it should be obvious if it isn't there.

  • grab the tightening bolt, pull it up and tighten it. should bind...

to pull it up, insert allen key, push allen key perpedicular to the line of the bolt so it binds, pull up and then tighten.

  • Cinelli normally use an expander rather than a wedge. They are a bit more problematic.

  • The expander bolt had fallen and got stuck at the bottom of the steerer. All sorted now, thanks all!
