The Fear

  • Got it today along Park Lane, filtering across to the right hand lane to go down Curzon Gate. I was fine with all the traffic, signaled very clearly after looking over my shoulder, slowed down a bit, checked over my shoulder again, and some prick in a BMW was screaming up behind me blasting his horn as though I'd just pissed on his bonnet or something. I was totally in the right and he was being a Class-A dickhead, but I suddenly realised how horribly wrong it could have gone if he hadn't been looking ahead properly. Really shit me up for about 5 minutes and I hugged the curb cycling back again for a bit, before realising that was probably more dangerous, didn't exactly give off an air of confidence on the road (exactly the thing that gets you into accidents) so spent the rest of the day being much more assertive and act like traffic should. I even shouted at a couple of RLJers (sorry, really winds me up), if you want to be treated like traffic on the road, follow the same rules as everyone else.

The occasional brushes with fear are good, makes you realise that there is something you can improve to make yourself safer.

    Good advice.

  • God knows what they put in the skunk nowadays. This forum is full of psychotics :-)

  • You smoke the herb?

    not regular like

  • I got the FEAR this morning when I heard Gordon Brown whining on Radio 4 this morning and the realization that he's the guy running the country smacked me in the face good and proper.... I still feel a bit shaky now.

  • Only time I get it is in really shit weather, when it's sketchy on the roads. Like the epic snow day (although that was exciting as well) and last night in the sheeting rain/gale force winds that I managed to catch coming home - I felt like I was on that boat in Deadliest Catch rather than Clapham Common.

I also used to get the fear when swimming in pools on my own. I always thought that some secret door would open and a shark would swim in - James Bond style.

I used to feel the same while swimming in the lake at night :-) Every now and then I had dark thought about all those fat pikes, white amurs and eels living down there...

  • I don't get the fear on my bike, totally wreckless (not good, but its the truth)

I get it when im driving my car these days, been driving since i was 17, now 23, have probably driven every day inbetween, but these days it shits me up that i could die.

When i was young in my car, i used to be completely wreckless as well, some very bad stuff in some very fast cars - and i never got what i deserved for it either! - Lost my nerve with driving now though. for no apparent reason.

although i did smoke a lot of herb.

  • I too get this, and in a wide variety of situations. I have had it riding along, I don't know what triggers it, I just get an impending sense of doom and start imagining everything thatr could go wrong... I drive too and I have had it driving, either me crashing due to some sort of car failure or road condition or someone crashing into me. My worst one is with cyclists when I'm in the car. I get it bad when I'm swimming in the sea too, especially if I can't see the bottom...

have you ever done scuba? Its absolutely awesome once you go deeper then about 15 and you can no longer see the surface. or if you're neutral over a cliff and can't see either. Such a great feeling.

  • Maybe you should read the Sun, instead of londonfgss.

  • How did you manage to find a pool someone else wasn't in? I swim and dream of such a situation.

  • only when riding home at rush hour in the dark on the kings road area with no lights..and its raining

  • Not Kings Rd, Chelsea then.

no bike lights or no street lights?

  • Is that someone from Metal Gear Solid? Character design looks similar.

  • Yep, MGS3, he's called The Fear believe it or not =P

  • Ha, WAC!

  • I get it on my motorbike.

Cold + wind + dark + torrential rain all over my visor + oncoming headlights completely blinding me + shitty broken cats eys + NSL road. Do not like. Keep thinking I should sell it and get the (unbelievably) expensive train.

However, a lovely quiet Saturday morning sunny ride after a night shift and I think again.

I love the weird shit you were afraid of as kids! There was a tiger under my bed and sometimes cobras on my ceiling fan.

  • Does anyone ever get the fear.

I get the fear every time I open my eyes in the morning.

  • You aren't the only one Aram.
