There are 2 types of chroming AFAIK, single plate and tripple plate.
Chrome doesn't stick to steel very well so they first plate nickel (I think) and then plate with copper. They follow this up with the chrome plate. This is because some metals stick better than others. This is the most durable, but of course, you pay for it. I got my cranks tripple plated, it cost me £20 for each arm.
Single plate will not be as durable, will rust spot faster and peel faster.
