I was at the Changing Places thing at Canary Wharf yesterday lunchtime to have a sit in a lorry cab and see it from their point of view. It was interesting to see the visibility problems truck drivers face, even in a low truck with all mod cons fitted.
There were lots of police down there and the two I talked to were surprisingly decent. One is top dog on the Met's traffic division and was genuinely distressed about the increase in cyclist fatalities. He will be conducting some research fairly soon on cyclist behaviour and he said that, without wishing to pre-empt the findings, he expects one of his recommendations will be allowing cyclists to jump red lights when turning left if it's safe to do so.
He's going to send me the link to the research project as soon as it's online, I'll post it up here when I get it.
