I have receipts for my bikes / bits. If you buy second hand there are other bits of evidence you can use. I presume it changes from company to company but I have heard of photos and ebay transactions being used.
Wouldn't you have net transactions history for the custom build?

i don't, but it's because i feel like they'll screw me out of it.... somehow.
Ask to see a copy of the policy and then how that looks to you. If the policy appears grey in any areas then ask them to clarify before you buy. You are fully entitled to know the terms and conditions of a contract, which is what an insurance policy is, and make sure that you understand them before you enter into it. If nessecary, provide scenarios and ask how you would be likely to be treated under those circumstances.

this is a mad thread title.... does anyone NOT insure their steeds in london?
I really wish I could, however I have chronicled my attempts to insure my bikes on the other "what insurance" thread, and as I said there it is impossible for me to do so whilst I live in a place with a housemate.
Not one insurance company will touch you if you don't live exclusivly with close family/partner.
Endsleigh are the only company that will ensure you if you live in shared accomodation, and their cycle insurance sucks balls.
One of the reasons I am looking forward to buying a house is so I can insure my bikes.

I used to insure with Butterworths though the LCC when I lived in shared accomodation without any problems.

They wanted £1,200 per year to pay out 75% of the value of the bikes if they got stolen, and the amount they'd pay out went down for older bikes.
i.e. not financially viable.

Stand alone bike insurance works out to be about 10 per cent of the value of the bike per year (so yeah after 10 years you could have bought another).
i've lived in london for about ten years. in that time, i've had four bikes stolen. bike insurance seems like good value.
Stand alone bike insurance works out to be about 10 per cent of the value of the bike per year (so yeah after 10 years you could have bought another). Usually there is no minimum payment so cheaper bikes are still worth insuring.
Always check the details of the policy - but for mine they were not unreasonable E.g.:
etc (You shouldn't do that stuff anyway so it is good advice.)
Piggy backed on contents insurance is a better deal, I have heard.
Anyway I got mine insured for peace of mind.
