My 2p:
Get the Dawes. A whole bike is better than a frame.
Also I think there might be less work than you think. I know a new powdercoat in you GFs fav colour sounds good, but I really think with some elbow greese you could clean it up well... and IMO I think it'll look better than a home re-spay which prob wont last that well (no offence intended).
Then its just regreese, tyres, brakes, cables, saddle (mates GF has a charge one - good apparently).
If you have money left you could rebuild the wheels.
Remember your GF will love the thought and the fact you've done the work.

+1, i found an old dutch bike in a skip and di it up for my gf, she loved it and shes not even into cycling. i think the fact that you are putting in the work and getting her into what your into should earn you some good browneye points

well I have also seen this bike
It looks like less of a project, definitely doesn't need painting and if I could get it for about £60 would probably only need £30-40 spent on it to look amazing!

who is this jd you speak of?
RIght, I have got an offer of this bike off ebay for £15
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180429703819&ssPageName=ADME:X:BOCOR:GB:1123
And want to do it up for my girlfriend for a christmas present, she wants a 3 speed bike so I thought one with a sturmy archer rear hub would be a good idea.
The frame alone would probably cost £15 so even if the other parts are kaput its could still be a good idea.
I'd ideally like to do the whole thing for under £100 I know this is a tight budget but I am skint, I think I may even have to re spray it myself, perhaps possibly even get the decals redone myself.
I wanted to know if anyone has rebuilt wheels with sturmy archer hubs, the rims on this bike are probably fucked, but if I could rebuild new wheels cheaply that would be amazing.
I assume I would need the following
Pedals/Bars/Levers/Grips/Seatpost/Saddle?Brakes/Wheels and paint. all this has to be bought for under £100 including a lot of elbow grease!
My alternative is this

as i'd need all those bits anyway.
Just wondering if anyone has any experience of respraying frames themselves, is it something that can be done in a weekend as this is all the time I would have to do it in without her finding it!
Any help or people thinking i might be insane would be greatly appreciated!
