• I can recommend Mai'da on Bethnal Green road, right at the junction with BL (just after the Beigel shops).

Their Tandoors are on view to customers, see them skewering and whacking the lots of lovely kinds of breads in you've never seen anywhere else. Their starters are really worth exploring especially. Ask for advice on getting a good balance to share around with everybody. There's a chicken starter, a skewer wrapped in chilli paste with shredded beetroot, that is possibly the nicest thing I can imagine. The kind of place that sells Lamb Kurma but not Chicken kurma ... Kurma is a lamb dish, so that's what they serve. And it actually is spicy! Just not with chillis. You get what I'm trying to say here?
Mai'da doesn;t serve alcohol. You can presumably bring your own if you want to drink that stuff. You'll note the clientele are mostly south asian. They do all these mad Malteser / Ferrero Rocher milkshakes and stuff.

Also check out Tayyabs on the street behind the Mosque on Whitchapel road. Famous and good. Eat kofte and naan there, and their pumpkin curry is great too. VERY reasonably priced back in the day I haven't been for ages so not sure now.
