  • Bump.

    This thread is lols.

My favourite part was about soho being great 'cause of the lack of suits and hipsters.

  • I'm old enough to remember when the Foundry was a Barclays' bank, where the couriers used to cash their cheques on a friday. It'll be a great loss to the area when it closes with its freeform, anything goes policy. Same as what happened to Hackney when the Samuel Pepys closed.

  • I never liked the Sam Pepys, but it's true, there aren't any decent pubs in Hackney Central any more except for the Pembury, which is my favourite and the one I call my local despite living five minutes' bike ride away.

  • Come back, Lenni! Make London what it used to be again! :)

  • That's a myth unfortunately. Not sure where it came from.

Yep, as bombadil said, he was one of the main people behind it, although didn't participate much in running it.

I stand corrected. The Foundry's landlord told me himself that there was no KLF connection about 2 years ago.

  • I'm intrigued now, will ask Jonathan next friday.

  • Jonathan runs Ellipsis who put out some of Bill Drummond's books. Bill Drummond and Gimpo were both involved at the beginning, but I doubt they have much input at the moment. Though the Tennants T in the window is one of Bill Drummond's pieces, and there is one of his posters up advocating "I could do better than that".

  • I was in the Foundry thursday night where they had a poetry/storytelling/performance thing based on shit.I think the actual night was called I Shit.It sounds awful but was one of the funniest nights I've had in there.

  • i've had some great times in the foundry over the years. I was in there on friday actually and it was infiltrated by some chavy essex scum which is like most of shoreditch nowadays. If they get forced out I hope they relocate

I think they're looking for new premises which might have a later licence.

  • And a big sidewalk, I hope.

  • Or pavement.

  • With an offie nearby...

Yeah, I remember the bank closing, then going to a party when it was squatted, the Vaults were left installed, probably still there I don't know.

    Nope. Footway.

  • Bleeeuuuurrrgh, I had the misfortune of seeing the proposed shape of the hotel in a picture the other day. An utterly shit design (in my view).

  • that's utterly fugly, why oh why

    Dear Gillian,

I'm writing to show my dismay at the decision to close "The Foundry" and replace it with a hotel and arts centre space.

If this happens it will be a travesty. The venue at present is unique in it's ability to harness the creative talent of a wide range of artists and musicians. The proposed re-development will serve no greater purpose than to further gentrify an area which has already lost a great deal of the creative spirit which has made it so world renowned. Venues like the foundry are essential to the incubation of talent that London has been producing over the last decade, to close it down and replace it with such a proposed scheme would be a terrible decision.

I understand that the proposed scheme will include an arts and community space, however seeing many many similar schemes in the past I have little faith that this will be able to re-create the atmosphere, sense of ownership and open policy that the current venue provides.

Please for the sake of London's creative community and the varied communities from all walks of life who cherish and value this space, please reject this application to change the venue.

  • It's a great shame. I couldn't give two shits about the foundry personally (though I fully understand that for many it's a really special place) but it's a fantastically brilliant site and deserves great architecture.
