if you want some bling I have a set of White Industries ENO 42t single speed chainset (http://www.whiteind.com/cranks/singlespeedcranks.html) plus a tange bottom bracket, cost me 200£ new (cranks - 150£, ring 30£, bottom bracket 20£, plus shipping from america), would sell for 140£. It's the silver model, is as new, but has a few scratches here and there.
as for your bb, if its a fairly new frame and built in the UK or USA its most probably british threaded... the bb axle size depends on your chainset.
http://www.londonfgss.com/thread3372-6.html great thread which shows what other people use on their chainsets, is a good guideline. AFAIK sugino messenger chainsets use 103mm bottom brackets. You can buy them cheap over ebay, wiggle or chainreactioncycles, although www.velosolo.com has a good selection of high quality bb's. If you can find the relevant axle length for your cranks I would try to get ones with metal cups, the cheap shimano un54s are ok but i've stripped the plastic threads on a few.
Looking for a crankset with a 42t ring.
Something like the Sugino Messenger crankset on the Charge bikes or the Miche Advance Track crankset.
Might need a bb too but I have no idea what bb threads I have.
Nor do I know what bb I have now...
All I know is that I have a set of Stronglight 49D on there now with a square taper.
Recipe for disaster?
Cheers
Also I'm in Newcastle upon Tyne so will need to be local or delivered.
