  • I'll be the first to say....boohoo, I couldn't care less, its just another pub, unless you're a fakenger and wanna hang out with all the couriers on a Friday night because they have attained a level of street cred that you deem as aspirational, therefore you wish to bathe in the glow of said street cred.
Besides, i'm sure the couriers will find another place to hang out.

You're such an independent and free thinker, James. I wish I could be like you.

    Oh. Wait.

It's "just another pub" to you. The Foundry is a place that people know that they can go to on a Friday and expect to see friends and have a good time. It's nothing special in itself. However, I've had some great nights at the Foundry. Sorry you haven't. Doesn't change the fact that the people who do have fun there will be gutted to see it go.

I'm not going to be writing any letters though. The Beehive is the new foundry.

  • It's not the same anymore without the railings.

  • Level the whole area

It's become the new covent garden.....

  • oh yeah the railings. I keep meaning to check out the lack of railings but I never noticed as I went past this morning. best keep an eye out tonight

  • I used to quite like listening to London's worst piano and sax free jazz combo there on a Tuesday night.

Hahaha, they put on some classic stuff dont they?
Have you seen the large mad woman reciting odd poetry whilst someone tickles the ivories? That's the charm of the place.
I'm off there tonight if anyone fancies it.

  • The brewery moved to Epping.

Ii did not know that....don't tell me I'm about five years out of date on what's happening in Shoreditch....please tell me Charlie Wright's is still open...my favourite Hoxton bar.

There's many an evening I've marvelled at the worm lady.

Some of the art was indeed turgid, but the spinning dancefloor downstairs and their open ("art") door policy was fun. That area's being gentrified into the new west end isn't it?

  • Foundry to me is the first place I played in London. I played a 4 hour glitch/noise set on a Saturday afternoon in 2004. No one batted an eyelid. As it got later I moved into more beat-driven electronics. Some guy came over and said "that was really good til the last bit."

Now, the art, the music and the general craziness aren't everyone's cup of tea, but the Foundry is actually a pretty unique venue IMHO. Like Resonance FM, it supports a whole manner of forms of expression that don't have many homes.

A few years ago the council killed their music license and there's been a feud running ever since I believe. I'm not surprised to see the council has won, but it's a bit of a sad day for creativity in London.

  • lame news. seems like it's all done and dusted though Sol...? what can really be done?

Old street / great Eastern St is going to be even more disgusting and full of rotters than it already is. What a shame. The Foundry is an oasis of grubby normality in that soulless party zone and the scenario Afternoon details is the one I knew the foundry for, regardless of how much of a home it is for the courier crowd on a Friday night.

For all you people not giving a shit, you should. That junction with a poncey hotel is going to look like a dog's dinner, fitting right in with the dress code of the people who walk past it heading for Tabernacle and Aquarium.

  • Iplease tell me Charlie Wright's is still open...my favourite Hoxton bar.

Me too... I've had some crazy nights in there over the years... Mental place... Is it still there?
Loved Horatio's 'The Beehive is the new Foundry" remark...

  • if you're on about the one on pitfield street, it is and doing some late night jazz sessions and shit

  • fitting right in with the dress code of the people who walk past it heading for Tabernacle and Aquarium.

Err hello. Get with the picture. The Tabernacle closed down like aaagesss ago. Man you hipsters are not really on the ball! :)

  • it's a happy ignorance in that case mike.. i'm not familiar with the many establishments round there catering for the Chris Moyles crowd..

  • dunno about being done and dusted, they did send out the council appeal request only yesterday.

I used to work there about 5 years ago, and have always loved the fact it looks like a squat, with sinking sofas and unmatched chairs, giving you that feeling of scruffy familiarity.

  • I like the Foundry. I hope they manage to maintain the large turning wheel in the floor on the lower level and also the original vault door on the basement room. Everything comes to an end though. Sad to see it go.

  • i hate it when people come in and ponce a place up in order to make it look even worse.. if you know what I mean..

we're getting swamped by what I've taken it on myself to call Krispy Kreme Kulture.. "hmm.. what's this? a more obscene, sicklier version of something that everyone's actually already happy enough with? and four times as expensive to boot? yay, let's ram that down the public's throat!" Losers.

  • dunno about being done and dusted, they did send out the council appeal request only yesterday.

    in that case..

cheers for putting this up sol, even though it's disheartening.

  • I've always thought the foundry was a total dive. I like a ratty hangout as much as the next person, but it's always has zero charm as far as I'm concerned.

If people really care about it they should've PAID for their beer rather than take a bag full of cans.

  • So you'd prefer to see a poncey hotel there whose art promises are merely the result of a strategy meeting?

  • Dudes, Whoreditch died 15 years ago anyway... Spilt milk an' all that...

  • yeah, and now they want to put lipstick on the rotting corpse..

  • btw teenslain - "15 years ago" is not exactly true.. you've been off the circuit for a while, it got a bit interesting again a few years ago. admittedly it's a frickin nightmare now (I even saw a hen party with "L" plates and shit the other week!!) but a poncey hotel is not going to help matters is it?

  • Shoreditch died the day The Conqueror closed... Fact... Might've been less than 15 ears ago tho', probably closer to 10... ;]

  • i always loved going to the foundry. it's all about that big area out front where people can mill about with their bikes, drinking beers (from across the street and inside!), yelling at friends riding by, knowing your bike is safe cause you can see it. also an excellent location if you live in east london -there were many times i was riding home and made an impromptu stop at the foundry cause i saw people/bikes i knew hangin' out there. it would be a real shame to see it turn into some yuppy art space, imo.
