Easy to say when you come from a middle class background. It's easy to characterise the working classes as 'neds' and 'chavs' but more difficult to understand.

I grew up in Dagenham and while I might be a good educated ethical person now, there was a time when I was a gnat's cock away from being two thousand times worse than these kids shoving people off bikes in Dalston. And not because I'm a psycho or because I enjoyed it but because that was teh only way to get any respect, to stop yourself from becoming a victim of those (very few) psycho kids who will literally stab you for fuck all.

And matey is right above, Dalston is really not that bad as long as you're smart. Those hoodies tend to look out for victims and if they've got a fight on their hands most will back down and find another victim - there are plenty of 'em in hipstertown. You can't say the same about Dagenham or Burnley or Wakefield or Tenderloin or parts of Oakland. Getting all class war about it doesn't help at all.

I worked in Dagenham for a while, reminded me a lot of Ilford, except there are a lot more racists and alcoholics in Dagenham.
It gets a little better the further you get from Barking though, Barking makes Dagenham look nice in comparison, then you go a little further and hit Ilford....then you reach East ham......jeez, that place is like Ilfords waste disposal pipe leaked and dumped all the shit in one place!

Ilford's alright, it's no worse than Romford. But then it's like opposites for me, I get all the BNP cunts in dagenham giving me aggro, and you probably get all the AZN rude boiiis in Ilford causing shit.

I'm definitely not pushing a victim mentality. I remember when I was involved in crime (only petty, mind) I was fully aware that what I was doing was bad for society as a whole, I just didn't give a shit. Kids LEARN morality, they aren't BORN with it.

Understanding this is the difference between actually getting through to a kid and only being able to communicate with them through the boot and the fist. Which is ultimately the problem in teh first place, no?

we have tried, as a society, to 'communicate' with these cunts, and it just does not work. there are just no proper consequences for their criminal behaviour. that is why they are cutting our d-locks with angle grinders in broad daylight. they have nothing to fear, their actions have no repercussions.

if they can't learn a proper sense morality, then they should learn it in a 4ft x 8ft cell.

So true, The Azn ROOODBWoys don't like white people much, just as the BNP cunts in Dagenham don't like anyone that isn't white much, oh yeah and they hate Jews to, just walk into a pub in Dagenham and start talking about anything Jewish and you get dirty disgusted looks within about 30 seconds from around 70% of the peeps in there.
Its a vicious circle, not sure where you go in Ilford or at what times, but I think it largely depends how near you get to Eastham, Barking, and the other "worse" areas around Ilford, yeah I guess Romford is about the same as Ilford these days, although once you get over Hornchurch way its not bad at all, in fact some parts of Hornchurch are actually quite nice I think.

Have you ever BEEN to Dagenham? Do you know what it's like to live on a council estate in South London? These kids might have enough food and warm houses but when they're raised by third generation dolescum in council estates where the kids carry shanks and father figures are absent and the only way to get respect is to take it from someone else, then that's a recipe for the kind of shit you see right here.

The only difference is that these kids are no longer fucking each other up, and instead have realised that these little hipster art fag kids who've moved into their area in the last two or three years because it's so 'urban' are a much better target. No offense to anyone in this thread but if you parade around a £2000 neon fixed bike to a kid who can't even get a job because of his accent, then expect there to be some conflict. Maybe where most of you grew up you can expect to keep your shit just through some kind of mutual respect. For the kids who grew up in dalston the vast majority of them have to fight for anythign they have.

I understand where these kids come from. And don't get me wrong, if one of them tries to take my shit then I'm going to try to diffuse the situation and if it doesn't work I will dismantle them. But no way am I going to sit here and let someone say that these kids have never had it better than anyone in history, when in reality they have no power, no money, and they're constantly fed images of excessive consumption which they can't be a part of.

In the last 3 years i've lived in new cross, Elephant and now Brixton. I feel so much safer here than I did living in Leeds and Sheffield. Everybody thinks Brixton, Peckham etc are super fucking dangerous, I think the real problem with these areas is gangs on gangs. Sure you get a few people beggin for cigarettes or whatever, but if your not involved in the whole gang thing, i think SW/SE postcodes are pretty safe to live in.

I almost think that in SW/SE petty crime isn't that bad because people are to scared of the possible consequences i.e. shootings stabbings etc and therefore its a lot safer than people think. I feel way sfaer in Brixton, Peckham, Camberwell etc than I do when I'm out East.

No one's talking about absolving anyone of anything, or of calling the accused 'victims' themselves. Those of us who aren't knee jerk right wingers are just saying that the problem is a bit more complicated and subtle than 'they are all benefit scrounging scum who have everything given to them and choose to become criminals because they are basically inherently evil'. If you hold that view, then you don't have to consider them as humans properly and it makes things simpler and easy for you to deal with. The problem is it's not that simple. Oh, and the suggestion earlier that kids from these estates get offered 'money, jobs, universities' is pretty weak. You really think one of these kids is going to go to Oxford and qualify as a barrister?

Others have raised objections to the blanket condemnation of an area and its inhabitants in more ideologically orientated language, but, as the old adage has it, you (lot) started it.

Police don't seem to stop&search as much any more, probably for fear of being called a racist, and all the bullshit time-consuming formfilling that goes along with it. Which again, leads to kids carrying drugs and weapons with no fear being brought before the law, which is why gun and knife crime has skyrocketed. I know this isn't the only reason, i just think it's a contributing factor.
