hit the volunteerlondon.org website (something like that). I was thinking about some too.
I had an offer of talking pictures from the trips for disabled children, but then I was given a year long contract and it fizzled out. -

I want to do some stuff for National Trust, BTCV, things like that, but I need a proper job first where I'm not working long, strange hours for peanuts

Try Crisis - I used to waste my evenings/nights picking up food from supermarkets (food hitting the 'sell by' date) and drive it back to the depot and then spend hours sorting it by food type and UBD - with a bunch of well meaning but coldly officious, tedious, humourless, 'right-on', politically correct thought Stasi.
I was eventually rejected for calling the homeless 'tramps' rather than 'clients'.
Crisis Christmas was more fun, you actually get to help out and interact directly with homeless people and there is all sorts going on - it's a bit more relaxed working directly with people who don't focus all their energies on the subject of the correct nomenclature for tramps.
(it's 'tramps' by the way, and for woman - 'lady tramps').

I used to do free design work (nearly 20 years ago now, Jebus!) for a voluntary organisation in Notting Hill... Was great, I got a few nice bits in my folio and they got some lovely looking printed stuff for train fare and the price of a sandwich... Voluntary work is a righteous thing, you'll enjoy it... This has made me think I'll deffo offer my services up next time I'm going through a lean patch... :]
Check out if you have a local volunteer's bureau... -

How about we as a forum do something at Christmas? I think there was a great initiative last year to deliver toys to kids at various homes.

Every charity in the world does something at Christmas, the homless are still home less the rest of the year spread it out a bit. something in the deep cold of January or February would probably be more helpfull

I have just applied for a position at Crisis over Christmas. Due to work commitments I can only do two shifts, but I hope it will act as a good introduction.
I also would be interested in perhaps the Forum to do something over Christmas. It was a proud moment when Scott not Scott organised the easter egg giveaway.

If you are involved with Science, Engineering, Mathematics or Technology you can become a Science and Engineering Ambassador, the volunteering opportunities are numerous and varied. I have run deisgn competitions to build bridges and air vehicles but also helped out on careers days. You can mentor over the internet also.
Schools put in requests which are emailed out every month or you can do things off your own back.

Hi Hobo
Have you considered Crisis?
http://www.crisis.org.uk/pages/volunteer.html
They're starting to sign people up for Christmas, but have year-round opportunities too. Work with single homeless people providing all the stuff other than a roof that you need to stay off the streets for good. (It's where I work btw) -

I might do Crisis this year too, better than spending the day indoors fighting with blood relatives.

Christmas is not the same if there is not a knife fight between drunk siblings

Cheers for this.
when I was at school I helped set up a science roadshow, and went out to schools in the community and I loved it.
signed up, going for induction 17th Nov.
As im finally working fewer hours I would like to volunteer in some capacity and was wondering if anyone had any experience.
I would like to work with the homeless community preferably as I have had some experience with being homeless and would like to try to help those who weren't as fortunate as me to change their poisiton.
