  • Can anyone suggest what guards to use on a specialized single cross?
up until now I've been happy to put with a the odd soaking of the pants but the time has come!
    How do you measure them?

  • use the fucking search.

  • Measure what? If you mean which width to get, buy the guards that are around 5mm wider than your tyres. So If you ride 28 tyres, get the guards that are around 35mm wide.

    Buy SKS Chromoplastic mudguards.

  • /thread

  • highjacking!

i want to get vic sorted with some mud guards for her little bike so we're talking 650c and quite tight clearances. anyone got any suggestions? oh yeah. track fork with no eyelets so ... yeah.

  • matt - pm dancing James

he had a sssswweet mudguard that attached to the seatpost and was a concertina design which meant to compacted down to about 20cm long, dead easy to take on and off as well

  • thanks wayne! i think i know the one, seen it in blb etc. i'm more looking for the front guard to cut down on spray=wet feet. would a crud catcher on the down tube do much?

  • crud guards protect your face more then feet.

  • I had one of those extendable jobbies wayne mentions and they work really badly.

How about some Crud Road Race ones, the new ones. Stelle had some fitted to her frame and they looked good.

I reckon I'll try some on my road bike too.

  • if anyone buys them, and only wants the back, lemme know

  • i just orderd a set of those for me, saw some 650 narrow guards for vic on sjs just before the page crashed... doh.

  • Yeah I ordered a set of the new crud ones as well... very interested to see how they work out.

  • Go see cruds homepage

  • that's the info i was after! I'm not an expert so before parting with the hard earned I like to swot up. My local Specialized dealer are only stocking the seat post MTB jobs, not sure they'll do the job.. Thanks

  • Richie I have a front crud road racer going PM on the way.

    Incidently crud roadracers= WIN

got them on the Rourke which has tight clearances and they are great,
Have one on the back of the Villers as well, but not enough clearance for a front, which is a shame

they shit on Raceblades in my opinion. Will only fit up to 25c tyres tho, and even then I hear they dont fit some 25's like Rubinos. Fit my Maxxis Refuse 25's fine tho.

  • nice one cleft.

  • I love it when a plan comes together

  • Just scored some (free) Roadracers and been out today, actually riding thru puddles coz they are so good!
Easy to fit, weigh nothing, and keep all the shite off your back and front. Epic Win! :)

  • just bought some zefal trail mudgurads. they fit my 28mm tyres on a racing frame and are pretty tight to the tread so no super 50s style fenderesqueness fins. Needed a bit of doctoring to fit but they are pretty solid, light and not noisy. Only €15 too. They might be these ones so even cheaper in the UK http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/Zefal_Trail_Hybrid~City_Mudguard_Set/5360043663/

Photo is with my old 23mm tyres so mudguards look a bit bigger.

  • Roadracers don't fit 28's unless you have big clearances.

23-25's no problem. Loving the fact that I now have a winter beater.

  • I agree with Clefty and Donut, I fitted crud roadracers to my road bike two weeks ago, they work like a dream on 700c x 23

  • well, the crud things fitted ok, nice little brushes sweeping the deep v's to hold the guard in place. i'm fucked off tho cos the screw on extension bit for the back of the front wheel fell off in the dark on my ride home. bollocks! over all, for £30 i'm a bit meh... kinda wish i'd bought those zefal ones above... dang.

if these guards were one solid piece, they would be 300% better. grumble

  • Matt get in touch directly with Crud, I've heard they are pretty awesome at sorting shit like that out.
They will hopefully send you the bit you're missing.
I think someone else posted a similar problem so I regularly check the tightness of mine now.

  • cool, their site looks like it suggests sending a stamped s.a.e to them requesting the spare part... but that sounds tooooo helpful...
