Hello. Newbie Alert. Getting a SS/Fixie soon. Have been to Islay twice (and Jura once), but in car not by bike. Kennacraig is the only place you can ferry from. The climb out of Port Askaig is pretty nasty but the rest of the island is fairly rolling. The island is very welcoming of cyclists as I recall. Ardbeg make/sell cycling tops and organise an island ride finishing at the distillery every year. I'm sure there's stuff on their website Bruichladdich also sell cycling tops so at least show an interest.
Very welcoming place, whisky heaven of course - Lagavulin Distillers Edition for me please. Bowmore is the biggest town, is central in terms of getting to all the distilleries and has the most amenities. I always stayed at a little B&B in Bridgend a bit further on. I can imagine the roads being a bit hairy - they are not the most well maintained, and the drink driving laws on Islay seem to be a little more lax, but a group would help matters.
Just thought I'd add a bit of info. I've never ridden a SS/Fixie yet, so I'm not about to sign up. But maybe, who knows.
