I actually think it's a lovely frame and build. But i don't think its porn worthy. Chain, steerer not cut, i dont particularly like the forks...
the steerer is cut but only by 20mm, the manuel for the forks say a 10mm space on top of the stem is necessary, and i didn't want to leave myself with no options for stem adjustment, so there is 10mm about and below the stem, and those forks are fucking wicked ;)
p.s bling chain FTW

...and i'm puzzled yet again
am i in the right thread?I'm with you Scorch. I don't get it.
In my opinion, it's ugly, and that's saying something, as I know my bike's ugly (get the self depreciating remark in early). It looks slow, boring and practical, full of chrome hangers, levers and gadgets, to me it's an ego bicycle. It says, look at me, I've got the time and money to restore / rebuild something from the past and ride it now. In the age of economy, I'm living the excess. It's what my flat cap wearing, fisherman neighbour used to ride when I was a kid.
It doesn't do anything for me at all. In my opinion, it's in the wrong thread. It's probably even on the wrong website.
Dull.
It's horrid. But that is just my opinion.

That's why it's great for someone who wants slow, practical bike to move shit around and see things around.

Would someone please start the 'Slow practical bikes for people to move shit around, whilst seeing things around the place' thread? Sounds like it might be fun.

am i in the right thread? It may not be the kind of bike you or I would want, but there's no question that it's exemplary of its type.

I'm a newbie and I'm happy with my bin. But these bikes are so disgraceful that even Liz Hatch can't revive my semi. May as well rechristen this thread to Skip Bikes.

It's not from the past, the frame is modern. There is no point in arguing about the aesthetic appeal of it (horse for courses...), however saying a touring bike looks slow is like saying a TT bike doesn't look suited for commuting.
Moreover, the offending bike can do -in 2009- a perfectly good job as confortable, sturdy bicycle intended for long distance cycling. I would probably prefer a Rohloff'd Thorn, personnally, but that doesn't make the Grand Bois a pointless, irrelevant bike for showing-off purposes only. If you doubt of the pertinence of it, look at the modern touring bikes offering from today's brands. Are they that different from older ones? In another hand a pro racing bike from the 60s would much slower than any decent modern road bike. Which does not prevent a lot of people from restoring old Colnagos, Mercians, Gazelles etc... And you know what? Good for them. And what gadgets are you talking about? Mudguards? Pump? Now, where's Skully?

Depends who you ask. Some seek only beauty, others insist on meticulous function.
