  • so i want to start making bikes, so does glob + woody...anyone else wanna join in?

At the TAA I said that we'd do a welding workshop which basically means we all take welders and bits if bikes and try to make some sort of crazy bike...prob on 10th November..up for it??

Plus we should just generally meet up to make some too...

    i got excited by these:

I'd start with steel, before moving on to something as difficult as Titanium Woody.

  • haha i didnt really give it a good look, just a glance before i ran to a lecture, looks fucking bad-ass though no?

  • that streetfighter quad cycle on atomiczombie looks like it would be fun

  • Can we make Tron bikes plz?

  • can e make one of them bikes wot does skids?

  • I might go and try and make a full sus down hill rig with a gearbox instead of a derailleur. That's do-able, right?

I'd like to give it a go, but I know I will be shite at it and don't really need an extra frame atm. Also, I'd dead skint and can't afford nice tubing/to build it up.

  • i just want a mother-fucking tallbike, ever since riding Alex's friends one in Tolouse, and he told us it was like "moses parting the sea" the way cars get out of the way

  • awesome spokes...

  • Braising is neater, and doesn't need the 'goggles' - but it's an art.......

  • I wanna make one of those long style baggage bikes....its just a case of extending the rear forks a sticking in some supporting strops.....mega long chain and your away!! :-)

  • You can't MIG bikes. need to TIG or oxy-accetlyne them.

  • You can MIG bikes. I have. Hell of a lot easier than TIG for a beginner.

Nes - I'd like to join in on the Nov 10th workshop thing. I can bring bike bits and ideas but I'll need to share a welder.

  • You could use bubble gum to hold them together, there are reasons why you don't. MIG welders don't have tight enough tolerances to work with thin bike tubing, and they are bad at keeping up speed around curved surfaces. Sure any one who can work a hot glue gun can work a MIG welder but that doesn't make it the best option. Leaning how to TIG well enough to hold pieces together passably takes about 16-20 hours, time well spent.
Hell, with self darkening hood and pulsed welders you can look at what your doing when you spark your bead and you don't have to dip the rod, shouldn't even take you that long. just dont tough the rod with the tungsten. That hurts.

  • I agree with you. Learning to TIG is a very useful skill and no doubt produces a much stronger join. But it is damn hard and I fully respect those who can make those gorgeous crescent welds. Mine looked more like bird shit, though to be fair I've not done 20 hours and my experience has so far been with an old style mask which means I'm familiar with setting fire to my trousers and hair. In comparison MIG felt miles safer, easier and much more productive. And my MIG'd bikes are still holding together.

bruce, who does loads of welding will be there, with his welder to help. Plus I'll ask my friend who has a tall bike and who is starting to build frames

  • we can probably bring globs welder too? and i think i should have a frame to donate for tall bike

  • Count me in ... t yb cnam ni eb dluohs

  • gah stupid virusy internet cafe. Yes, I'll be there. Mig'd this to shit when I was learning to weld. and yes, what kat says...

...the front end of my new frame (no better photo until It gets painted)
I'm only posting the photo to be smug.

Anyone got access to an oxy-acetylene welder here?

Boo. That'll teach me not to read threads properly. Sorry, I would love to join in a mass-freakbike-build day (I really need a customised trailer), but I'm not sure about the feasibility of getting to Manchester. I'm not saying no, but..... sigh.
