Cheers for that jlinln - thats kinda what I thought - surly the rotafix gives you more leverage than a chain whip.
On the cheap lock ring front I've got a formular and a shinny chromo BLB one. I'm using the BLB one bc its fatter - so fat infact there is still a bit of thread hanging over.
If anyone has any experience of BLB lock rings pls shout.
I'm thinking I just need to give it another good seeing to.
EDIT: yes the cog is what I want to tighten, I have a lock ring tool.
