France skate/cycle tour

Posted on
  • Hey,

Myself and a few friends are going on a bit of a road trip to somewhere in France in February to skate and cycle by day and party by night. The plan is still in its embryonic stages and at the moment and just wondering whether anybody has done something similar and can offer a decent route or two?

Bear in mind: 5 Poor students, 3 bikes and a week's worth of clothes and shit in a 1.4 VW Polo, so no mountainous terrain to traverse please and thank you.

  • I am thinking of a tour in France over the next couple of weeks. Advice so far is that the West coast is beautiful but more likely to be wet, and windy too with the wind coming off the Atlantic. Therfore to stick to the south-west where the weather will be better. Provence and the Pyrennees are recommended.

  • why take a car when you can eurostar?

  • I live in Annecy, France. Its about 30min south of Geneva and 7.5 hours from Calais on the edge of the Alps so lots of moutnains but you dont need to drive up any to get here. There is a big skate park and about 6 little ones, also a lot of skaters in the town centre and a few fixed gear riders and parkour people knocking around (skating is welcomed here). There is a fixed meeting on thursday so I'm told and they are trying to put together some bike polo. I met a couple of dudes who pointed me to pignonfixe.com (search for Annecy)

Also Its on a lush lake which has a 40km loop around it mainly on cycle paths with only one hill and is doable on a fixed gear (they held a tour de france time trail here this year). Also great place if you want to pick up cheap bike frames. theres a massive sunday market in CLuses (bout 45min away) that has 100 odd bikes - lots of peugeot, motobecane, libera and all the old french makes.

It doesnt rain much here either, maybe for a couple of hours, a day usually at the most then clears up pretty quickly. Also downhill riding, XC, parapenting, sport climbing.....kind of talking myslef out of moving to london now. You'll be able to get some snow in tignes I thnk if you board which is about 2 hours away although its still really warm here (got sunburn yesterday)....

Lyon is an hour away, Chamonix is an hour in the other direction

EDIT: Just read the thing about partying - Annecy is pretty dull by night. head to marseille
