An Alu track frame should be strong enough. Track frames tend to be overbuilt compared to road frames as stiffness is more important that weight saving. For example a Dolan Pre Cursa weighs in at around 1800g for a 56 which for a road frame would be on the heavy side heavy.
Lots of MTBs are alu as well!
