• hi all

I don't want to shell out for tools etc and cheapest quote ive had from bike shop near me is £25.

If anyone has the tools and willing to help i can drive over with the frame and headset - no cups need to come off just new 1" headset to go on. Willing to pay £10 if anyone can help

any help would be much appreciated

    cheers
    sam

  • Wood + Hammer

  • yeah ive read that - it really that easy? im fairly useless at anything DIY - friend of mine said he would never try and do headset again - was nightmare for him

  • well his hammer and his bit of wood were obviously not big enough

  • ok ok ill give it a go :)

  • Sandpaper the inner of the frame a little to remove paint etc and then lube well with grease. A vice can work too obviously.

  • Did mine with a screwdriver and hammer last week. Covered the end of the screwie with electrical tape to offer a bit of protection, as suggested by someone on my headset thread post. Worked a treat.

  • I did my first one a couple of weeks ago - a hammer and a piece of hard wood and some grease did the trick. it did take quite a bit of vigorous thumping though.

uh, you shouldn't grease the outside of the cups where they press into the frame.

Thanks, will remember that for next time.

  • i have a headset tool, but unless it is just a cheap frame and headset, i would recommend getting the headtube reamed and faced before installation to make sure everything is aligned perfectly, and that the tolerances for the press fit are ok. brixton cycles do headtube reaming and facing and headset installation for £30.

  • hi all

its reasonable cheap frame but dont want to kill it :) - it sounds like wood and hammer is way to go so ill give that a go 1st

    thanks for tips

  • The wood and hammer method or threaded rod with wooden plates at either end work but over time the headset will wear much quicker than if you get the headtube properly reamed and faced. I agree with velo libre. Bite the bullet and pay up. It's cheaper in the long run

  • well if it is a cheap frame i don't think you need to spend £30 getting the headtube reamed and faced, i didn't on about 4 frames before i realised that it is better to get it done, but the majority of people who install headsets don't without major problems.

  • just been down to my local charity bike shop and got a part for a rebuild and he inserted the headset bits and i offered him a fiver - which he wasn't going to take...but he took time out to help so it proves to be a bargain
