Signed and tweeted (with a request to RT). "8 cyclists have died this year in London in HGV accidents. Help make the streets safer & sign this petition. http://bit.ly/n7XMv (PLS RT)"
Wrote to local MP via www.theyworkforyou.com.
As the Mayor of London brought out a new 25 year transport strategy for the capital yesterday, is it worth a concerted effort to get the GLA to also take notice? This could easily be incorporated into the Congestion legislation. I'll look at the transport strategy (I have to look at the economic development one anyway for my job!) and report back - unless that's already happening.

Truckersworld petition against Boris Johnson's closure of the CVEU. All cyclists should consider signing this. Great that it's kicking off with the lorry drivers too.
The CVEU is the specialist police unit dealing with HGV accidents. It's a vital resource for cyclists and lorry drivers. Truckersworld forum here: http://forum.truckersworld.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=3&p=146692 [now correct link]

The link to the strategy consultation is http://mts.tfl.gov.uk/Read-the-strategy.aspx. It is open from the 12th October until 12th January. Within the transport consultation are proposals around "the cycling revolution", "Better Streets and improved environment" & "Facilitating Freight" - all of which are suitable topics to raise and discuss the issues highlighted here.
It makes sense to me to take advantage of this consultation, and lobby this issue. Numbers always help with a consultation of this type, so the petition can be directly refered to.

Well spotted, Jo. The link to the forum page doesn't work, BTW, you might want to edit it.

We're at 3,000 signatures.
But where are all the rest... come on people, if you haven't signed and you're resident in Britain... then get a move on and sign.

I'm assuming there are 9613 bots at work here. Hopefully my assumption is incorrect and a couple of LFGSS group emails promoting NOTHING but this petition might help? Though I can appreciate a desire to not appear invasive, I think in this case recipients would happily make an exception especially if the email was solely about the petition - how quick it is to fill out, how much of a difference it could make etc.

Given that the thread has 1,616 views, I very sincerely doubt it's that people 'don't want to' to sign or even 'can't be bothered' - my assumption is just that the majority don't know about it.

I thought I'd let you know where we're at with our campaign.
We had a meeting with Gwyn Prosser MP on Wednesday at Parliament. An EDM (Early Day Motion) is being tabled to raise our petition agenda. Hopefully a meeting with Lord Adonis, and Louise Ellman MP (Lousie is big on fighting the lorry problem in the UK) will happen soon after the EDM is drafted to discuss the issue of cyclists and HGVs.
It was a real blow to hear that Boris has axed the CVEU. What’s another fight to add to our plate?! I spoke to Diane Abbott MP for Hackney about this. She has tabled an EDM asking for Boris to reinstate funding for the CVEU.
EDM 2144
CYCLISTS' SAFETY IN LONDON
Abbott, Diane
That this House is saddened and alarmed by the tragic deaths of 10 cyclists on London's roads this year; notes that eight of these deaths have involved heavy goods vehicles; further notes Transport for London's decision to shut down the Metropolitan Police Commercial Vehicle Education Unit (CVEU); recognises that the CVEU is the only unit in the country with the power to investigate lorry operators; further notes with concern that 70 per cent. of the lorries checked by CVEU since 2005 were found to be defective in some way; believes the work of the CVEU is desperately needed to improve road safety for cyclists; and calls on the Mayor of London to reinstate the funding for the Commercial Vehicle Education Unit.Diane has asked that we write to our MPs asking them to sign up. Obviously this is really important as she needs support to get it through.
Will post of a copy of the EDM regarding our petition request as soon as it's done.
Thanks,
jo
