Strange, I see much more of these:
One hand on the handlebar and a mobile in the other. Or in case of fixie riders and some estate hood rats on their bmxs - a mobile phone in one hand and the other hand tucked in under the armpit.

All the kids on my estate have moved on to hands free calls coupled with a praying Landis set-up, minus the tri-bars.

The good thing about cycling is, that I haven't seen any woman retouching her make up and talking on the phone at the same time while cycling and what's quite normal while commuting by car.
Yesterday I saw some middle age chav lady with a greasy pony tail simultaneously driving, applying mascara, talking on the phone tucked in between her chin and the shoulder and having a fag hanging from the corner of her mouth.
I'm sure she was eating peanuts or wine gums at the same time :-) -

Has anyone noticed more and more geared riders putting their hands on the bars in the "fixie skidder" style narrow position? as demonstrated here:
I've seen more people on geared racers doing it lately and somehow thought 'fair enough', but I was just heading along The Vale and saw a fella on a bog-standard hybrid with wide flat bars - and his hands in this same position. I was taught to ride with my fingers on the brake for maximum speed of reaction, but if he had to brake in a hurry, what the hell was he going to do? Take both hands off the bars, ride no handed for a second, put them back on the grips and then brake? It's up there with brakless & singlespeed isn't it??
Nevermind that, hasn't the singer from Slipknot put on weight?

I saw a guy the other night whilst out in my van riding towards me with both hands close to the stem. As I went past I realised it was a geared racer with cut down risers and only a front brake.

it's not so much the riding on the tops it's the hunched shoulders, rocking of hips and random swaying from left to right that accompanies it.
i guess they think it looks cool?
i think they look like lab monkeys on acid set free on a fixed gear bike with the saddle too high. -

I dreamt last night that i stuck risers on my geared bike and was riding it with only a front brake. I only noticed this after getting in from a ride (in my dream) and I woke up with a lingering feeling of guilt.
And a cold. :(

I want to see them brakeless. Apparently there are some individuals riding freewheels without any brakes...

Yeah I've seen this a good few times. I think a lot of the replies above are missing your point, it's not about people with drops (designed to include this position) but with wide bars, putting their hands on the inside metal bit and thus the wrong side of the gear shifters and nowhere near the brake levers. And yeah I think it's a lot to do with 'looking cool', or maybe because they see so many riders doing it with drops they think it's a better way of riding..

i've seen some chavvy people riding around on their mountain bikes with the V brakes wide open, completely useless
what's going on?

They don't know how to service them, so if the pad rubs on the rim (often when the wheel isn't true), they simply unclip the whole shit.

exactly it's the mainly due to the way most people, chavvy or not ride their bike into curbs and then wonder why they have wobbly back wheels.
"Bunny hop or stop"
is my new campaign to save rear wheels all over the country.

that's one way of solving the problem I suppose

You're nowhere near the brakes when riding that position on the tops of drops either, but it doesn't stop you getting your hands to them quickly.
I had a beater hybrid for a bit years ago, and sometimes did the same thing. Partly to stop my position from getting static, and for aerodynamic reasons when riding miles into a headwind.

No-one has the monopoly on hands-near-stem.
You're right, not now but remeber when Winston was investigated back in 1987 for tying to monopolise that and several other hand positions and the monopoly commission ruled against him? We can thank that ruling for the freedom to be able to ride with our hands near the stem and several other positions.
I thank the Lord every day for this freedom.

Common sense prevailed. And could you imagine how big his head would've got if he'd won.
I don't even like riding with my hands butted right up against the stem. On the plus side, it seems to make me unspottable to the average fixie skidder.

awesome picture
Haha fantastic!
I sometimes put my hands in the middle of my handlebars on my mountain bike. the handlebars on that are almost as wide as a door so....go figure. Like others said i just do it to change position, i dont know why but i find having my hands near to the stem very comfortable.
Ive seen a unipack singlespeed with only a front brake and bullhorn bars. :|
