Thanks for the heads-up - that was excellent. Makes me very nostagic - I grew up in the 70's. It's hard to convey what it was like hearing some of that stuff for the very first time - having never heard anything like it before. Can still clearly remember when I was in a club and heard Blue Monday for the first time.

Best to get a profesh built and ready modded one though - they come up on ebay quite regularly.

anyway, just watched the program, really enjoyed it but disappointed it stopped dead in 1983, just as I wanted to hear more from PSB and New Order.

Also, they mentioned Joy Division's early conversion, then chose to feature Atmosphere, which is arguably not as important as She's Lost Control....

She's Lost Control doesn't really feature any synths, at least not prominently ( from memory) - it's more about Hannett's drum production and fx, and Hooks bass. It certainly has an 'electronic' sound to it
Atmosphere has the huge Solina riff on the chorus, much more 'synthy' in the conventional sense.

Yeah maybe, to me though She's Lost Control is vastly more important in their electronic epiphany

i think Hannett was the key ( the records sound electronic, but famously, live the band were more heavy post-punk than anything else), and i don't think it was really an 'epiphany' as such - they just started to use synths, in much the same way that the prog bands were already doing -as a supporting instrument.
JD's sound is defined by the production style - the stripping down, putting bass and drums to the front, opening up space for the guitars to exists in, and of course Hannetts beloved digital delays etc.
As Barney said in that program - the 'epiphany', if it was one, didn't come until they were in NY in 1982, after Ian was dead.

a 303 will set you back 8-900, the mods are about another 500 i think.

although you could drop it off to him when you're down under, plus he'd give you mates rates since you're probably related to him distantly
