You can use whatever length cranks you want as you apparently get used to whatever you have. Mike Burrows did a few experiments with very short cranks and low gears as opposed to long cranks and a high gears. (the short cranks allow higher rpm which gives same speed as lower rpm long crank with higher gear)
Only one man's opinion but he reckons as long as you don't change between bikes of a 145mm cranks and a 175mm it isn't noticeable after a few days.
