Cycle Speedway?

  • Been trying to get into this, looks like a good laugh. Racing brakeless SS bikes on a dirt oval could be the next Bike Polo? Well maybe not but worth a check anyway. Sandwell Lions are holding a Bonfire Classic on the 7th, their track is in Tividale, just off the Wolverhampton road. I reckon cycle up from the hagley if anyones interested.

  • Nothing will ever be the new polo.

  • go for it man, it is huge laughs. they race 4 laps and its a right lung burner off the start, mad overlap on the bikes and crazy bars, brakless.

  • sounds like good fun

  • sounds good to watch but harsh to crash. i'd spectate.

  • My Dad used to do this back in the day before he he got his rotrax with full nuovo record (the bike got given to him, lucky bastard). Down poole there is a very active speed way track and there used to be ovals all over the country ... My grandfather told me that they used to make them outta bomb craters left over from WWII or something as crazy as that.

Anyway it kicks serious arse ... Great to watch and me and m.f. was only watching a practice session.

  • dude,
I went there a few times and rode! its mad as fuck, basically you boot it hard as can then throw the bike into the corners. one guy cut me up and nearly took me out, I carried on going straight after correcting then had to jump off, if it had been one of my bikes I would have just bailed and let it hit the fence but dint want to do that to one of theirs ;-)

  • Yeah it is awesome, it involves racing at the limit and the possibility of getting hurt .. what ain't to like.

  • what ain't to like.

    you already said it:

...the possibility of getting hurt ..

Unless youre some sort of cyclomasochist...

  • haha .. seriously mate ... getting a little hurt is fun ... getting a lot hurt isn't ... until weeks later and then you can still have a good laugh about it. P.S. I have been ran over twice and fucked myself up in lots of strange and mysterious ways in the name of cycling ... and it always given me,my mates and my family a good laugh .... afterwards :D. PPS you won't live forever. the

EDIT: The second time I got ran over my younger brother was doing his "revision" for GCSEs. He put on a "Worlds Worse Crashes" program that was on bravo while I was in a sling with stitches recovering on the sofa .... it was so traumatic at the time I had to ask him to turn it off and watched murder she wrote with jessica fletcher ...

  • The fact that I won't live forever is the reason I don't like getting hurt! More time being hurt = less time to enjoy riding.

As a side note, I seem to remember some twat laughing at me for wearing knee pads for bike polo... I wonder if they'd be laughing if they'd had the same knee injuries as me... nothing serious enough to require operation but any hit now leaves me in pain for weeks :-(

    Anyway....

  • The Norwich crew went out on a mission 2 weeks ago. Ended up at the uni (UEA). Got kicked off by the security guard so went to Eaton Park speed way track and hossed it around on the fixed bikes. Had a few laps, races and taught a few lads how to skid on the loose gravel.

All in all it was a good evening, and the speedway track was like the icing on the cake.

They do races up there on a Sunday in the summer, and believe that you can use Mandarin Cycles event bikes if you aren't equipt. Lots of fun!

  • Track in Cov, not used - got some pics somewhere. There's a shipping crate which I'm told is full of cycle speedway bikes up there too, dunno who has the keys but would be great to get access to them.

A guy playing polo at Bike Blenhiem was telling me some players use cycle speedway bikes in Polo, maybe a chance to multisport on one frame...?

  • P.s. The Cov club got thrown out of the cycle speedway league for fixing results by making up fictional races when short of riders. What a joke.

  • isnt the season coming to an end now though lads? seems about the only sport that has a summer race season, god knows what its like racing on muddy, wet gravel :-{

    Muddy, wet & gravelly?

haha oh man, but isnt competitive cycling all about cheating? ;) lets see if we can get a hold of them bikes then shall we?

    That'd be an idea.... :)

  • I missed the chance to go to the Cov speedway track. The track has been there for years, since I was a kid. I used to race radio controlled buggies around the track as a kid. It only started up again recently though, and now it's no more?

  • Yeah gone and mostly forgotten it seems!
