also .. when you own a piece of land, do you own it all the way to the centre of the earth?
not in the uk, but in some countries (can't remember which) you do, which means that tube trains and eletrics and pipes have to go down the road ways.

In the US you own the land down but you don't own any minerals unless you own the mineral rights, and you have to allow utility companies or the government to bury what ever they want for little or no compensation.
