Cambridge Polo Winter League and Team Night

  • Lets begin our own little league again, who's in? Got enough for 5 teams I reckon. This time we'll organise who plays who at the beginning then organise matches to suit our diaries. It looks like we might have a go er for free courts/lights too so this might be more practical now.

Would this be Tues nights or Sundays? Or a combination of the two? As everyone knows I work evenings so mid-week attendance can be a little sporadic.....

  • Yep. No draws this time around (see the old thread - from memory we picked names from a hat in the maypole?). We should have enough players for 5 teams, which equates to 10 individual games, which is more than plenty to establish a table. If we want we could do play offs and finals games.

From looking at London method, we just nominate 1 or 2 games per week, then each team agrees the best day/night and time to play the game. If we are doing say 3 10 minute games, we only need find 30 mins (plus say 10mins break time) on either a tues or sunday, per league game.

Also, if these new courts pay off, then we have an opportunity to play any evening of the week, which makes the whole thing far easier.

It'd be nice to set up a group calender so we can book in our games online.

  • i am DEFINITELY in

  • team nite sounds good just need a team ? we could choose the teams like they do for the F.A cup with no.balls in a bag and each team has a no. ?

  • I'm in, even given current non attendance. This will force my hand. Is a team night going to be seperate to the Tuesday/Sunday?

the way i see it, people who arrive on a tuesday are pretty committed anyway, therefore it would be ideal to have the tuesday nights as team night to guarantee good attendance so that the lights get paid.

people who aren't in a team could jolly up with fellow poloists for the evening to get used to playing as a unit (this should hopefully spawn our next few proper teams, ala 'fen boy three').

following on from the success/failure of team night will eventually determine the feasibility of a cambridge winter league mark 2, given so few of us. :)

  • Team nights...
I think at the start of team nights, we all get into teams (supposedly teams that would play in a tourney together).
Doesn't have to be the same every week, so people that aren't in a proper team (proper team meaning Fen Boy Three or Team Cream) can swap around each night to find people that they play well with. Hopefully there will be chemistry between these mixed and matched teams so that next team night, those 2 or 3 people will opt to be in the same team again (and then go on to compete in tourneys blah blah blah...).
Sorry if this is hard to follow, it's just a suggestion!

  • sounds good to me but wont it cost loads because each team night the team would have to pay for flood lights???
