I get what you mean Ed, everyone gets what you mean, but you're thoroughly mistaken if you think that riding a fixed gear first is the only way you can fully appreciate 'the joy of gears'. Yes, riding fixed helps with cadence - roadies have been training on them for years. I'm glad you're enjoying the poetry of it all, but please... no need to preach. And as for the Mercian - it won't be the first time I've ridden a geared bike since before or after the fixie fad.
