How long do chains/cogs/rings last?

Posted on
  • Generally when riding fixed, (in distance preferably) how long do these parts last in your personal experience? Or at least, how long before you would normally change them?

    Thanks in advance.

p.s. I did search but couldn't find much.

  • 27,789.4 km for alu
    49,112.8 km for steel

  • it might also depend on what kind of strain you are putting on them. general terrain, gearing. if you are spinning lots on flat road the load is going to be different to hilly terrain and big ratio.
all of that might be untrue but its just the initial thought that came to mind.

  • Can you be a bit less vague hippy? even a ballpark figure would do. cheers.

  • Normally once a year to 18months

Really depends upon what riding you are doing. How clean and lubed you keep the transmission. Road dirt and salt do terrible things to the chain.

Drop into most bike shops and they will have a gauge that will check the wear of a chain.
Normally a chain over 1% worn should be replaced along with the cog on the back as the two wear at the same rate.

The front ring normally lasts about 3-4 chains as each tooth takes less force on the way round.

  • What is the strongest chain available? I have broke three chains this month (thankfully without injury) and need something that will instill some confidence in me.

are you sure it's not user error?

i have been using same chain (kmc z410) for about 18months on s/s at 70 GI.

  • Sounds like you need someone to show you how to use a chain tool.

  • try to avoid cheap far east monkey metal chains, or any component of that ilk if possible. (difficult these days as a lot of original equuipment fitted to new bikes is cheap crap ...had seat retaining bolt shear off the other day on my folder, luckily was going slowly on a quiet road at the time!)

  • All of them have been installed by different bike shops.

  • Stop taking your bike to shops specialising in cheese.

  • if you've had a chain installed by a shop and it breaks that quickly you should go straight back to the shop because either they have fitted it badly or it's a defective chain; assuming you've only been giving it normal use.

  • Which shops btw? This forum loves a good bike shop name and shame.

  • I've been using a KMC K710-SL for 1 year now... still shines like new

half link chains are a lot stronger (around twice the breaking strain of a standard track chain apparently) and are supposed to last a lot longer.

how you've managed to kill 3 chains in a month is beyond me though, they must've been put on incorrectly, been made of cheese or you're doing something horrifically wrong while you ride!

  • KMC Kool chain, or, this bastard... if you don't mind a shite, heavy lump on your bike! http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=11288

  • 345 miles

  • I ride 22 miles a day (monday-friday) and i change my chain about once every 5/6 months. But I'm looking for a good chain (any colours) if anyone could advise...

  • hobo can't use a chain tool.

theres no set distance or time for your drivetrain.

    1. "chainstretch" is the first thing you look for in a wearing drivetrain. This can be quantitatively measured with a tool. google it. Or if your have experience with this stuff, you can start to notice when your chain is getting crappy and change it before it's truly shot.

    2. a stretched chain is what wears out chainrings quickly. They will wear eventually, but if you don't maintain your chain, they can go fast. A usable chain ring has a few mm of flat plateau at the top of each tooth. These flat spaces start to shrink as a chainring wears out. That is an extreme example.
