  • Places I have lived in London, for how long, would i live there again and why:

Holloway Road/Seven Sisters, 18 months, no, busy main road, bit depressing.
Hackney (off Lower Clapton), 3 years, yes, cheap, big houses, vibrant, friendly.
Hanbury St (off Brick Lane), 1 year, no, it's now hipster central, expensive.
Greenwich, 1 year, maybe, quite cut off, touristy, expensive. nice though.
Kingston, 1 Year, no, far too far out.
City Rd (just off main drag), 6 years, yes big beautiful house, cheap and close to everything.
St Peter's St (posh bit of N1), 18 months, yes If I could afford it, lovely but expensive.
Kilburn/Brondesbury, 1 year, no, run down edge of town feel, lack of social life/good pubs.
Off Upper St (also N1), 9 months, no, love it but tiny for the money.

  • But in that particular area they actually fight against each other on a regular basis and tend to not mix but rather stay in defined areas or particular estates/streets - you may not agree on this but its one of the reasons why they are trying to rehouse a vast amount of the people who live on the estates/streets around there .....except that now they cannot afford to complete the required housing schemes, which is causing a lot of stress to the poor local residents.

And yes most of the major urban centers house the vast amount of immigrants, because most cities also tend to have the worst and cheapest accomodation alongside ready availability of low paid menial work, its one of the reasons why housing in north london & east london for the working classes have been used to illustrate how flawed our housing policies have been over the last fifty years, some of the funkiest findings were found down the road in hackney which is still a shithole for the most part ; Race and Council Housing in Hackney, Report of formal Investigation, Conducted by the Commission for Racial Equality into the Allocation of housing in the London Borough of Hackney, Commission for Racial Equality, 1984 - why many of the estates are so shit

Do you have a problem with London's immigrants?Who are these "poor local residents"?The English? Most of the residents in the Green lanes area aren't English,I know because I live there. The only time I've seen trouble there was the shootout a few years ago between the Turkish and Kurdish gangsters and the time the Kurds attacked the Turks as they were celebrating a victory in the world cup.Two times!

You should read a bit about London's social history especially the Cable St riots when Jewish and Irish working class people united to stop Mosley's fascist blackshirts marching through the east end.
    Good day to you.

  • Just don't.

  • Just don't.

    just did

  • i live in a warehouse just off of seven sisters rd, between manor house and tottenham hale. it's cheap and well connected transport wise(not that it makes much difference on a bike...) it can seem a bit sketchy sometimes, but green lanes has some ace food places, and stoke newington is not too far for food/pubs. i like living near the parks too, always nice to pop out for a bit of nearby greenery on a nice day. (being really clse to the castle for climbing is also a big bonus for me, but i realise that is more of a niche attraction...heh) i don't know too much about further up, towards tottenham/seven sisters, but it does seem pretty hectic traffic wise, and i did view some pretty grim places while househunting. but then again, you might find a gem! but i don't think i'd be particularly comfortable living much further into tottenham than i am now. (bit of a ramble i'm afraid, hope it contains something of use!)

Are you the one with the really cool pad? From what I remember it looked very spacious.
I remmember I think you were saying you were lucky to come across it or something?

If I had the money I'd do the same.

How did you go about finding it?

  • I have seven sisters, Natalie, Marie, Esther, Joanna, Jenny, Lisa and Jasmine - I would never live with them, there would be too many fights over the hair straighteners.

  • I hear that Haringey is run by gansters/mafia type people?
Who take protection money from the local shops...
Some houses round there are used to torture people...

Weather this is true or not. Quite scary to even think about.

Not sure what to believe to be honest. Could be a local resident on my road that's this fucked up, and Iive in a more posh area of highbury.

    Expect the unexpected they say...

  • Seven sisters is safer than finsbury park - finsbury park - manor house and green lanes are all ghetto no matter what you think they have done/may do to the area they wont get "niced" up like some parts of east london = AVOID

I live in Finsbury Park, my street is nice, have had no problems in six years, close to two parks (Clissold too) although Finsbury is my favourite, more landscaped, better views, less Stoke Newington "types"....and has a circuit road that I use for training (2.2k)

great for food, Green Lanes, Yasar Halim bakery and all the continental grocers...now a Hungarian deli and bakery too...Blackstock Road for "little Tangiers" Arabic food...

New library, great connections (10 mins to Oxford Circus by tube).....and the stadium if you like Soccer.

  • miss_socks, not Fountayne Rd, past the sweet factory?

  • Dude I am a proud second generation immigrant Russian & Caribean my other half recently moved from seven sisters her familys still in that area for since the late 60's and other parts of her familly are in green lanes and finsbury park shes turkish btw, I know about mosley and cable street and about the parks that have been named after poor asian kids in whitechapel - I used to pray in a mosque that was previously a jewish synagogue and before that home to french hugenouts its got a lovely sundial on the side of the building, and my family and myself have been in numerous incidents of violence in fact on one occasion my soon to be father in law was run out of green lanes by knife wielding youths who dident like the fact that he was turkish not kurdish, in manor house on rowley gardens where my elder cousin lives with his and my "immigrant" family he was recently robbed at gun point for a cheap chain, targeted because he also has a turkish partner, and the poor local residents are the ones who have been there for years and cant afford no where else, and social history yeah dude maybe I should read books you got some recomendations after all I havent spent anytime doing any reading/ research on a subject that is very real to me, you know being a second generation immigrant and all with family knowing they wont be getting rehoused in and around that area even though theyve been renting for over 15 years.

Either way the area is a shithole fact - its got culture though, but its shit and can be very dangerous the best thing about green lanes in my oppinion is the food but it doesent matter to me because I get carribean, russian and turkish food at home.

Im more annoyed at the fact that I will be moving to south tottenham next year but am currently in pimlico talk about a downgrade.......Im off to eat to some homemade dolma now.
Ohh and good day to you.

  • I've been looking for a new place and keep seeing this on Gumtree everyday, it looks pretty impressive (apart from the wonkey floors)for the money and three weeks free rent so I am assuming there has to be a catch, ie: the area is shite

quite possibly me. i do live in a really cool place, with heaps of space, but not sure if i've put any pictures up here. anywho, it is awesome, and i was indeed very lucky to come across it. i can't be much help when it comes to finding others, i kind of fell into it through a climbing acquaintance. best bet is to ask around i suppose.

miss_socks, not Fountayne Rd, past the sweet factory?

nope, not quite that far. tewkesbury rd, near seven sisters rd/amhurst park/eade rd.

  • ade, that must be really close to me. in fact, from the view from the window it is possibly right behind us! haha. i reckon it's defo worth a look, make your own mind up about the area?

  • Either way the area is a shithole fact - its got culture though, but its shit and can be very dangerous

Interesting fact! I live in a warehouse off Green Lanes and I like the place. Green Lanes is good for food and Stokie is fine for a pint. I've never felt threatened walking anywhere around Manor House at any hour, but as with anywhere in London, I'm sure you can find trouble if you're looking for it! And you've got Clissold and Finsbury Park nearby which is a big plus for me!

hmm interesting, might just do that thanks, I'm just a bit further south in Stamford Hill at the moment so will take a look.........might have to buy a very big rug to cover that floor though.

Fair enough buddy,I disagree with your assessment that it's a shithole but I understand that you and others have had a shit time.Sorry to hear that.
I recommend this:London the biography by Peter Ackroyd
    Enjoy your meal.

  • to be honest, i don't think there is too much difference between here and stamford hill. on the plus side too, you get a massive sainsbury's close by and don't have to mix with the mutants that always seem to populate the somerfield in stamford hill...hehe.

Yasar Halim is the best grocers in north London!
Oh and Winnie do not call it "soccer" it's FOOTBALL man!

  • +1 for Yasar Halim - the best bakers in London!

  • Green Lanes is great.

My advice would be to not live anywhere in London if you don't like vibrant or diverse places!

Really not that bad. Right on a tube, few bus stops south and you're in Clissold Park, I say do it.

Oh do fuck off... There are some horrendous places in London. I would happily sacrifice a vibrant atmosphere of crackheads loitering on my doorstep for safety and peace of mind.

If you wanted some crack though, just open your front door and problem solved!

  • Ohhh! Loads of Seven Sisters peeps. Lets all meet upp and have a beer (coz it's safer to travel in packs) ;)

I like my flat, converted warehouse, it's a smart space with high celings, but I do want to pick it up and move somewhere else with it.

The thing that '7S' lacks for me is any sense of community. It's got no centre and there are no nice pubs/bars. I'd never go in the pub at the end of my road for fear of my own life!
