  • Do you have any pics of the underside of the rack to better show how the vertical supports are all attached?

  • on this one the vertical stays have the ends bent 90degrees and pop rivited twice to the two horizontal strips. This is the part im most worried about, its really not strong enough and doesnt support it well enough to stop it swaying side to side with a heavy load. I think for the next one I will use one piece of bent round tubing squashed at the ends.

  • thought i might post a pic of my finished rack. I dont think this one will last long, im gonna make a second version with a slightly different design that will use thicker aluminium. Hopefully will still be light. (I know loading up a spinergy isnt a good idea, im building some drumbrake wheels for this bike)

Mate do you work at the BBC or something on Great portland St?
I keep seeing your bike locked to the railings outside my office.
Nice rack by the way :)

  • Brakeless with a front rack - very NYC!

Looks very neatly done. Personally I'd use chromoly for something like that cos I think it will be a fair bit stronger. Keep an eye on the rivet holes as the rivets might start to enlarge them once you combine grit from the roads with vibration and bumps.

  • Brakeless with no foot retention - very Shoreditch!

    fix'd.

    possibly not brakeless.....look again

  • yeah that bike had a coaster brake for a bit, I got it set up now 3speed with drum brakes but the rack finally broke last week so gotta start work on gen2.
Gonna try thicker alloy this time with slightly bigger rivets. I would make it outa cromo if I could weld or braze.
IRO DAN - I wish I worked at the BBC! alas im doing an internship at a print/web place.

  • Skulls, hows the 2nd gen going? I want something like this for my 70's Raleigh wayfarer that I am building up.

  • second gen is still in my brain at the moment. Got a couple of ideas I need to do some tests to see if its possible. Would be pimps if I knew someone that could weld aluminum.

The original is still going but I had to replace the alloy stays with steel ones and it also snapped where it attaches at the front brake hole.
I did use it the other day to transport another whole bike back from shop 14 so it is quite sterdy.

The new one isnt going to have the sides on it, they make it alot less versital. Ill post some pics up when its done.

We also got a neat little nitto rack in at tokyofixedgear.com its quite expensive and wont hold much but its really well made and should last forever. Its designed by one of the guys at Rivendell who have heaps of great touring stuff. Theres also and extension flatbed thing made for it. check out the Rivendell website. http://www.rivbike.com/

Ah mate, you a designer? I work for Grafik mag, our office is just opposite the bbc

  • I try and do some illustration and design work but usually end up working in bike shops. Love the article about michelin man your mag! I got stickers of him on that bike ^^^

  • I have one of these, made in the 70s by Karrimor. IMO being made in aluminium lets it down.

Things like this are much better made of steel. You could get the tools to braze for no more than £20, and you could learn to do it in a day.

  • After looking around for a porteur rack without rails for a while, I decided to have a go at making my own too, then found this thread and using the link to the warehouse of aluminum have ordered some bits meself.

Am going for something simple with a alu checkered plating with holes cut in it and bits of other shapes of alu to hold it there, have started a thread in CP for it as a laugh as I'm quite looking forward to this lil project. :D
