To counter balance it. I ride brakeless but I live in the New Forest. Only thing likely to pull out in front of me is a horse and I would definitely come off worse.
On the occasion that I venture into town/traffic I ride a lot slower as that is the only way to be safe. If I rode in traffic a lot there is no way I would ride brakeless as it really is too slow. If I was racing I doubly wouldn't even think about having no brakes if I wanted any chance of winning!
