I have the same problem with my new hubs and old frame:
So it's best to file the axel opposed to the frame? Looks like I need to take about 2mm off mine.
Any tips to file down an axel? or just hard graft? -

yeah thats right the axels don't fit into the fork drop outs
is there another way to do it, because i dont ideally fancy taking a file to my brand new hubs, i'd rather drill the forks, if i fuck up the forks, the whole bike only cost me a tenner so if i cock it up, it dont matter too much. my wheels as you will know cost way more than that, i'll file em if its the only way, but is there another way?
thanks

I had the same problem with the axel on the fork too but I just took a file to the fork dropouts.
However, there was a lot less to file off the fork. There's a fair amount on the rear dropouts. Plus it's hardened steel. Okay, maybe it's not hardened but it feels like I'm using a nail file on diamonds! -

no point filing the hub axle. I had the same problem, I only had to file off 1mm or so on the fork ends, it may take several minutes.

just a quick note to say thanks very much for all the advice comrades. I'll find get the old file out and give it a try. These old raleigh are a right kerfuffle, luckly I solved the bottom bracket issue already

I ended up filing the threads down simply because my (cheap) files didn't even make a scratch on my frame! All good in the hood now.

filing frame vs axle
Frame - harder metal, fuck it fuck the fame/forks
Axel - Softer metal , fuck it spend £5 on new axle -

Axel - Softer metal , fuck it spend £5 on new axleI don't know... you're only ever filing a tinny bit off the frame or forks, and its quite easy compared to filing an axle. Plus once its done if you replace your wheels you don't have to go thru it again.
I'm trying to bulid a beater. a circa 1982 raleigh equipe. My replacement modern wheel hubs wont fit the forks. I assume i need to drill them? Is there an accurate way to do this? I tried searching for the answer first on forums but couldn't find nowt, so dont beat me up!
