I had the same problem with the axel on the fork too but I just took a file to the fork dropouts.
However, there was a lot less to file off the fork. There's a fair amount on the rear dropouts. Plus it's hardened steel. Okay, maybe it's not hardened but it feels like I'm using a nail file on diamonds!
