The route through Hammersmith/Richmond Park is pretty much how I would go. The Thames Path, although lovely, is much longer than your first route.

I'm not sure about the North of the river bit but from first hand experience from Putney Bridge: lower Richmond Rd / Queens Ride / Priory lane (stay off the cycling lane) / Roehampton gate / Richmond park (stay off deers, bunnies and triathletes) / Kingston gate / Queens rd / A wee bit of K. Hill / Old London Rd / Penrhyn Rd via wherever you fancy (might be quicker to go via Villiers Rd, it was for me).

Thanks one and all - will try these suggestions this week - Section north of river is down through Clarendon cross, Holland Park, back of Shepherds Bush and to Hammersmith Bridge. Reasonably quiet and avoids major roads.

I'd avoid the Hammersmith Bridge because the Hammersmith Gyratory is in the way. I'd go into Chiswick and go over the Chiswick bridge. There is a bike accessible underpass under the Hogarth Roundabout and shared use footpaths until Chiswick Park

Quick question (on-ish topic), what would the best route be from Labroke Grove to Tottenham Court road, just up from the tube station? I've had a look at different routes, but can't really work out the best way to go.

You know you can order cycling maps for free from TFL? I ordered quite a few for free :)
Hi Folks,
I have taken on a lot of extra work this term and am planning on commuting Tuesday afternoon/evenings & Thursday mornings between Notting Hill and Penrhyn Road Kingston. I'd welcome any advice on routes as I am a bit unfamiliar with sarf of the Thames; my preference at the moment is cross the river at Hsmith, then down thru Richmond park & out at Kingston Gate and head for Kingston Hill and then on to Penrhyn rd. I just wondered if anyone has any advice re routing etc. I'll be on a Mountain bike with panniers & fat tyres so had thought about the Thames path via Barnes.
thanks in advance
N
