MTB Service - Anyone want to earn a quick buck?

Posted on
  • Hi people,

Just thought I'd run this past you lot first......

Does anyone know how to service a MTB and want to undercut shops pricing?

Its a GT Avalanche 1.0, the cassette and chain needs replacing but I'll get the parts and then I just need brakes sorting etc

    Anyone interested? Have the capabilities?

  • I haven't got a fucking clue mate - but I'll have a practice on your bike for £5

  • DIY.. what you asking is pretty simple and stuff you should know anyway.

You need a chainwhip, cassette tool, chain breaker tool and some allen keys, grease. Sorted.

    +1
Bit messy and time consuming first time round. But afterwards you'll the tools, and knowledge to fix things in the future.

  • Wax on, wax off.

  • you probably need to mention what the brakes are if they are hydraulic disks the person doing the job would need the correct bleed kit.

  • Rhys - thanks for the offer!

Others - good advice, if a little obvious!! I don't have the tools and am short of cash hence looking for a saviour (which I have found)

The main problem here was the front hydrolic brake which is fooked and I definitely do not have, time, money to buy tools learn etc!!

I'm sorted anyway - yet again the site delivers!!

  • just jumping into the thread - if anyone wants some cash to fix my (newly acquired) MTB's hydraulic brakes in the next couple of days, then let me know. They are Hope.

  • its not hard man.. you might as well buy some tools and do it yourself. seeing as my bikes have broken many times, i saved myself allot of money and fixed them myself, instead of asking a bikeshop to do a small amount of work with £20 labour charge added..

  • never seen hydraulic brakes before and they look a nightmare. all the research I've done points to needing to bleed the brakes and replace the highly corrosive fluid using highly specialised tools and techniques. I only got the MTB to do a couple of races ... wish I'd got something with V brakes.
