  • but you could double up with fabsil or nikwax if buying military stuff from army surplus, after all, all that does is mimic the lanolin in sheeps wool........

  • Or smear yourself in vaseline and go naked?

  • Or drive a car?

  • Or stay at home?

  • Is there an option to smear yourself in vaseline and stay at home?

  • Lets discuss the merits of hood vs no hood. I've never wanted a hood before but I added a DIY Velcro on one for a recent trip to Scotland trip and was glad I did, considering making sure the next riding jacket has one...

  • I've had a scout round...

why are you telling us about your grooming activities?

  • I'm not really arguing, just making the ellipitical point that there is no such thing as the ultimate riding jacket.

That said, if you're going to spend £175 on a rainjacket to roll to the grocery store in then you've got more money than sense. I've a £30 Descente one that performs that task perfectly adequately.

    +1
I think I made the same point in my first post on this thread

  • I've had a scout round

made me laugh quite a bit, thank you.

  • Fully waterproof =

    Fixed.

  • I've had a scout round, read some great recommendations on budget lightweight options (the Montane H20), some strong opinions on eVent winning over Paclite on the breathability factor (which is essential for what I need)...

I couldn't seem to see peoples recommendations, if cost was only the secondary factor and ultimate wet weather fast city riding performance being the first, what you'd go for.

Maybe not a Rapha, but still something that was waterproof, good venting but didn't make u look too much of a freak.

I've got my birthday coming up, so I reckon could gather together funds for a decent investment....what would you say...apart from the inevitable UTFS (which I did, honest guv...)

dhb Wickham eVent is meant to be awesome. It's about £100 on Wiggle.

I think Singletrack magazine are doing a group test in their next issue, so check that out too maybe.

  • well i've it got down to a choice of two, Paramo Vasco (but could get too hot?) or the shower pass elite 2.0 (which seems the better of the two but £40 more expensive)...

or, as in sage advice i've seen, htfu sumwhat, save a shitload of cash and wear what i've already got, my icebreaker base layer and mountainhardwear softshell and get wet but stay warm and breathable....

    I love gear

I like the look og this hood. Looks like it would sit well and twist with your head. Actually designed to fit under your helmet*.

(*if you wear one, but lets not go there)

  • I have an Endura eVent jacket which is great- never seem to overheat and as close to waterproof as makes no odds.

What I would really like would be a pair of shorts with the same qualities- Clefty got some eVent shorts and they fell well below expectations in terms of waterproofness, so I'm loath to get those.

Currently I have some Altura ones that claim to be but aren't waterproof, and it's annoying taking two pairs of strides to work with me.

  • waterproof shorts?

  • Strides?

ED: Do you mean kecks? Speak English man :)

  • waterproof shorts?

Jah- shorts that repel/do not allow the ingress of water.

  • Strides?

    Yep, underwear.

  • why though, if you're in shorts you're still getting wet, so you just need them to be quick drying, so basically not cotton.

what about the rapha or swrve ones?

    Situation is as follows:

Dammit cycles along in heavy rain, he is wearing Gore Windstopper tights, Icebreaker Merino long sleeve top, Gore overshoes, Altura waterproof tights, Cannondale Soft Shell and Endura eVent Jacket, Gore windstopper gloves with silk liners in and a Gore windstopper skull cap under his helmet.

(This is further into winter- I'd melt wearing that lot now).

Dry bits- head, chest, arms and hands (although the gloves will soak through eventually)

Wet bits- lower legs and arse.

The lower legs bit is fine- the tights dry out very quickly, it's the wet arse that I really dislike.

The Altura shorts were sold to me on the basis that they would prevent this.

Damn all salesmen for the lying swine that they are.

  • My altura waterproof shorts are fine. You need to re proof them from time to time.
