After a couple of near misses with the original tyres on my OTP, I decided a change was needed. It came with Kenda Kwikrollers - lovely in the dry but like cycling on greased ice if you hit a smooth surface like cobbles or drain covers in the wet.
So I bought a Zaffiro Pro for the front tyre, it's been tight. Then I saw a neat red-stripe tyre in my mate's LBS (Specialized "concept" store in Ruislip). It was a Specialized Pro II. So that's made for "pros" cos it sez so on the packaging. And that's good, right? Plus, it's a TWO. That's like a Specialized Pro, but one BETTER. So it's new AND improved - like Daz is, every week. They also told me that it's pretty good in the wet - better than the Pro. So I bought it.
Now, it's not a bad tyre, no hint of instant slippiness in corners like the Kendas. But these tyres skid like a fuck under braking. If I'm not actively putting my weight down through the rear tyre, it just lifts off, locks up and glides over the road surface. So I'm having to plonk my arse back down if I brake hard when I'm out of the saddle (they seem to work really well when I do that though). Now I'm running s/s with two brakes, so I have adequate stopping. But the way fixed riders skid with their weight forward would worry me with this tyre. Has anyone tried them, and am I being unfair to their tyre-dynamics? I'm thinking that perhaps this is a better front tyre than a rear. So possibly I should maybe swap the Zaffiro and the Specialized around. But as it's a new bike I'm still getting the feel of, I don't like to be swapping and chopping all the time when it's not necessary.
So, anyone tried them and got a view on how they perform?
